West Hollywood Cannabis Scene Could Look A Lot More Like Amsterdam in 2019

December 19, 2018

(KNX 1070) -- The West Hollywood cannabis scene is about to take a wild new turn adding cafes, restaurants and "consumption" lounges starting in 2019.

The city announced Tuesday that three businesses have been approved for cannabis cafe licenses, with a plan for a total of 16 more to open soon. Each new business must now secure a WeHo business license within the next 12 months and find a physical location.

The businesses will offer customers: edibles, cannabis-infused food, and drinks, along with smoking and vaping.

Officials began screening applicants in April. The independent five-member committee reviewed several hundred proposals before making a final decision.

The cost is $9,880 for a single cannabis business license.

“The City was very impressed by the quality and caliber of the applications we received, many of the businesses are unique, innovative, and world-class," John Leonard, theWest Hollywood Community and Legislative Affairs Manager told Eater Los Angeles. "The range of visions among the approved applicants reflect an entirely new era of integrated marketplaces, consumption lounges and cafes, cannabis restaurants, and immersive experiences; all of which go far beyond models currently seen in the State, or even the world. We believe these businesses will set West Hollywood apart and solidify the future success of the cannabis industry in the City.

Although many of the cannabis coffee shops in Amsterdam have shuttered, according to a report published in June of 2016, the city still has over 170 shops.
