While Smashing Pumpkins Billy Corgan is an oft-controversial and outspoken rock and roll icon unafraid to mix it up in public, the singer and guitar star turns into a big softie when talk turns to his three-month old son.

“All the OG Pumpkins now have two kids,” Corgan marveled, gesturing to his longtime and freshly reacquainted Smashing Pumpkins guitarist, James Iha.

“It happens in a flash,” Iha sighed, clearly awed at the fact that he’s now the very definition of dad-rock. “If we could only go back in the time machine and just know that’s there’s fertility in those riffs,” Corgan joked to a happily bemused Iha.

When KROQ joq Stryker pointed out during their KROQ Absolut Almost Acoustic Christmas interview that new Smashing Pumpkins songs like “Silvery Sometimes” are just as beloved by fans as ‘90s classics such as “1979,” Corgan seemed genuinely and pleasantly stumped.

“It’s kind of shocking,” Corgan responded.

“It’s good. I’m glad they like it as opposed to not like it,” quipped Iha.

“We actually do make music we want people to like, despite our many iterations of non-likeness,” Corgan interjected with a smile.

When Stryker inquired about the state of the band when they first reconvened most of the original lineup for the Smashing Pumpkins’ current tour, Corgan had jokes.

“No, we immediately had a fight over the deli tray. It almost ended right there.”

“It was like old times. It was good,” pondered Iha about that fateful moment when they first plugged in for the reunion. “Thinking about it was probably overwhelming, but when we actually started playing, it was great.”

Considering his partner’s measured response, Corgan jumped back into the conversation.

“It’s honestly the easiest thing we do,” he said. “Everything is still kind of weird, because we’re aliens, but once we play music, we’re good.”
