Mike Posner is a genuine enigma.

There’s a good chance that you know him from his breakout 2015 single, “I Took a Pill in Ibiza.” Perhaps he triggers your memory banks with more recent songs like the hit “Song About You.” For others, Posner is the guy remembered for his let’s call it interesting appearance on the Grammys red carpet alongside producer Blackbear. You very well might have caught him on the Warped Tour back in the day.

At this year’s Almost Acoustic Christmas, the Detroit rock city native revealed his inner rock star, taking the stage with a full band and bringing down the house with an electric and emotionally-charged set.

“I started writing songs when I was eight years old,” Posner recalled of his musical youth during a post-show interview with KROQ joq Nicole Alvarez. “I actually rapped the first eight years. I exclusively was an MC. So most of my things were about how good I was at rapping,” he explained of his earliest compositions. “I was pretty bad at it.”

At the age of 13, Posner progressed to making beats, thanks to a keyboard gifted to him by his mom. Things kicked into high gear during an internship at a Detroit radio station, where he met “Pat,” who he called Motor City rap star “Big Sean’s best friend” during the chat.

“So I ended up meeting Big Sean when I was 18 and started producing and writing hooks for him. Then when I started my own project, he gave me three verses. That’s how I got my foot in the game. Big Sean, love you brother.”

Posner was especially amped to talk about his upcoming full-length, A Real Good Kid, due to drop on January 18.

“We spent like two, three months on the transitions. So the songs, like, connect,” he revealed about the new album. “I know that most people don’t listen to albums all the way through like me, but for the weirdos that does, you’ll enjoy this one.”
