This year has been one wild ride for pure Michigan retro-rock upstarts, Greta Van Fleet.

The mighty men of Frankenmuth, MI, rolled into KROQ Absolut Almost Acoustic Christmas 2018 as returning heroes, hot on the heels of four major Grammy nominations for next year’s big awards show.

“I think the silence is a good indication,” cracked singer Josh Kizka as the entire band just kind of looked at KROQ joq Megan Holiday dumbfounded by the realization. “We didn’t expect that we’d get any nominations at all. I woke up, and it was 2 o’clock in the afternoon, and I had like a thousands texts —I thought the Pope died.”

Instead, they would learn that Greta Van Fleet was up for such marquee Grammy awards as Best New Artist, best rock performance ("Highway Tune"), rock album ("From the Fires") and rock song ("Black Smoke Rising").

“It’s been a long year. It’s been one long moment. There’s probably still a lot of processing that has to go on,” Kizka mused just moments after his band had rocked the Forum with a thunderous set of classic rock. For being AAC first-timers, GVF received one of the biggest and most passionate responses from the audience of the night.

The band cited “freedom” and “truth” as the two ideas they’d like to see Greta Van Fleet remembered for in the future. What Kizka summed up as “musical honesty” with a shrug.
