Kevin & Bean: GREAT NEWS!!!

Every Monday morning we bring you feel good stories to balance out all the bad news

March 4, 2019

Today on Kevin & Bean we have GREAT NEWS stories for you. We find news stories that make you feel good and restore your faith in humanity to balance out all the bad news you hear on the news.

This morning Kevin told us about a bookstore owner from San Diego named Seth Marko who was diagnosed with an aortic dissection, a serious and potentially fatal heart condition. He needed to have emergency heart surgery in January and his wife Jennifer Powell was unable to run their bookstore, care for him post-surgery and care for their 3 year-old-daughter all at the same time. To their surprise, colleagues in the book-selling industry came to their rescue. Volunteers from local competing bookstores as well as book stores as far away as Los Angeles were willing to go to their store and work shifts to keep their bookstore open. Funnyman and friend of the show Brad Williams was kind enough to fill in for Allie McKay on this Monday morning and he brought in a great news story as well. Wayne Hayer is a student at Morehouse College in Atlanta (or, Hot-lanta, as we like to call it). He needed to attend his algebra class where they were reviewing before midterm exams, but he was unable to find a babysitter last minute. With no other option, he decided to take his baby daughter with him to school. His Professor Nathan Alexander offered to hold her while he taught the class. This moment was shared by other students on Facebook and Twitter with the caption "My professor NATHAN ALEXANDER said 'I'll hold her so you can take good notes!'" Professor Alexander praised Hayer, "He works two jobs, is a full-time student, is involved in leadership programs at school and is a parent. This photo serves as a reminder of what parents have to do every day and how important it is to have affordable childcare." This was Brad’s GREAT NEWS!!! Click here to read the full story.

We’ve been doing great news stories for well over a year now. Maybe Bean doesn’t fully understand how it works, because today he brought us a story about 46-year-old Detric “Fat” McGowan. McGowan was praised last week for buying 121 boxes worth $540 of Girl Scout cookies from two girls so they didn’t have to stand in the 34-degree weather. One of the girls’ mothers posted a photo on Facebook showing McGowan, smiling with two of the girls. She wrote that the man bought the cookies after telling the girls, “‘Pack up all of your cookies. I’m taking them all so y’all can get out of this cold.’” What Bean may have overlooked is that Detric “Fat” McGowan, was arrested in South Carolina last Tuesday by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration on charges related to selling and distribution of heroin, cocaine, and fentanyl. McGowan was part of a “wide-ranging conspiracy” with several others to smuggle more than $1 million cash from South Carolina outside the U.S. to pay for drugs. His arrest resulted from a long-term federal drug investigation that began in September 2018. McGowan faces a maximum of life imprisonment if convicted. This was Bean’s GREAT NEWS?!?!?!
