Get Up On This With Jensen Karp: Kevin Abstract

Every Thursday morning Jensen Karp gets us up on something new

May 2, 2019

Every Thursday morning Jensen Karp brings our attention to something that we may not know about yet or something we may have overlooked in the past.

Now it's time to "Get Up On This."

This week, Jensen brings our attention to alternative music artist Kevin Abstract. Kevin is best known as a member of the immensely popular rap collective called BROCKHAMPTON that has dominated rap for the past two years. They’ve been on festival lineups, they’ve signed a $15 Million Dollar record deal with RCA Records, and they have a merchandise line that is unlike anything else Jensen has ever seen.

Kevin has been considered the leader of BROCKHAMPTON since the group was formed in 2010 despite not being the best rapper or singer in the group. His new album is called Arizona Baby and it may be the most internally vulnerable album of the decade. It’s co-produced by an extremely familiar name to KROQ listeners, Jack Antonoff. The album tackles the trials and tribulations of getting rich at a very young age, as well as a growing up black and queer in a conservative town like Corpus Christi, Texas. At times this album is an unapologetically gay album, from a prominent member of the Hip Hop community, which is totally groundbreaking.

This is a song off the new album called, Baby Boy.

This song is a little more in line with relationships he’s been going through, its called Peach.

If you loved these songs, go check out more music from the prolific BROCKHAMPTON. Most importantly understand that these days Alternative music comes from everywhere, and Jensen is working to expose all the directions from where you can find it.
