Every Thursday morning Jensen Karp brings our attention to something that we may not know about yet or something we may have overlooked in the past.

Now it's time to "Get Up On This."

This week, Jensen brought in a special guest Laura Steinel to talk about her new film that opens this weekend in New York and Los Angeles called Family. Laura is the writer and director of this film about an emotionally stunted aunt, who is a mess of a human being, who has been put in charge of her niece who can be best described as an indoor kid who makes weapons of nature and loves Chicken Parmesan sandwiches. Both characters feel that they are outcasts, but they have one thing in common - attending the Gathering of the Juggalos.

The Gathering of the Juggalos is an annual festival put on by Psychopathic Records, that was founded in part by musical act Insane Clown Posse.

Laura found the inspiration to write this film while writing a different film but the themes of women in business and women in a workaholic lifestyle stuck with her. While she was writing this film she also stumbled upon a documentary about Juggalos, and the end result is Family.

The cast is comprised of Taylor Schilling (Orange Is The New Black), Brian Tyree Henry, Kate McKinnon, Matt Walsh, and Natasha Lyonne who shows up in a cameo role as Rebecca the Juggalo. Also, Shaggy 2 Dope & Violent J from the Insane Clown Posse both appear in the film. They’re even promoting the film by tweeting about its release this weekend.

The Juggalo community is generally a messy and intimidating group, but at the same time, they are wonderful when you deal with them individually. Laura actually shot some scenes for the film at an actual Gathering of the Juggalos. The Juggalos helped her and took direction from her while recording shots for the film.

Family will get a wide release by the coasts on April 26th. Other than Big Money Hustlas and Big Money Rustlas, Laura has created the first endorsed film by the Insane Clown Posse and the Juggalo Community. During the segment we also got a glowing listener review.
