Get Up On This With Jensen Karp: The LAnd Magazine

Every Thursday morning Jensen Karp gets us up on something new

February 21, 2019

Every Thursday morning Jensen Karp brings our attention to something that we may not know about yet or something we may have overlooked in the past.

Now it's time to "Get Up On This."

This week Jensen got us up on a new L.A. Magazine with a special in-studio guest to help introduce it. It’s called The LAnd Magazine. A new local Los Angeles magazine by locals, for locals, composed of an editorial collective of 6 including Jeff Weiss. The majority of the staff are former LA WEEKLY staffers and people that love the city.

Jeff Weiss is the Editor-In-Chief of the magazine and he joined us in the studio to tell us all about the creation and launch of The LAnd. Weiss was a writer for the LA WEEKLY for 10 years before it was bought by group of Republican donors and Trump supporters from Orange County in 2017. Jeff told us all about the entire demise and self-implosion of the LA WEEKLY.

The first issue of the new magazine is full of articles and things that only make sense if you are in Los Angeles. It has an article about the last two Pioneer Chicken Restaurants in California, a long form interview with Chef Roy Choi, and a Mariscos food truck in Highland Park with a connection to El Chapo and Narco Corridos.

Jensen stressed the importance of the LA WEEKLY and what it meant. “It was such an important aspect of growing up in Los Angeles, having a physical copy in your hand. From the articles to local politics to going to the back of the magazine and finding out who was performing… or whatever was happening.” He also closed with a great way to encourage the audience to support this new magazine and to emphasize the how much a magazine like this means to the City of Los Angeles, “Guys, get smart. We can’t lose the idea of what LA WEEKLY was just because ghouls bought it.”
