Get Up On This With Jensen Karp: 88Rising

Every Thursday morning Jensen Karp gets us up on something new

December 20, 2018

Every Thursday morning Jensen Karp brings our attention to something that we may not know about yet or something we may have overlooked in the past.

Now it's time to "Get Up On This."

This week Jensen introduces us to 88Rising, a company that focuses on music management and overall media that furthers Asian and immigrant representation in Hip Hop. It was founded by Sean Miyashiro & Jason Ma and is self described as a hybrid management, record label, video production and marketing company.

88Rising released their first compilation album, Head In The Clouds, in July 2018. The album is 17 songs by musicians from 8 different countries including Japan, China, South Korea, Indonesia and even the United States (August 08 is from Koreatown here in Los Angeles). Their roster of artists include August 08, Joji, Keith Ape, Nikki, Higher Brothers, and Rich Brian (formerly known as Rich Chigga). One important theme that ties all of these artists together is that English is not their first language. In fact Rich Brian learned English from watching Youtube tutorials just a few years ago.

One important thing to keep in mind is how much of an influence Hip Hop is around the world. Many of these artists don’t even speak English very well, but they are able to mimic the style and cadence to bring Hip Hop music into their own world.

This album is a great record with a late summer vibe to it. This song is called Midsummer Madness with Joji, Rich Brian, Higher Brothers and AUGUST 08.

This song is Warpaint featuring Niki. Its sort of Pop meets Hip Hop and at one point this song was on Allie’s list for her ‘That’s My Jam’ pick.

This song is ‘Head in the Clouds ☁☁☁’. They don’t speak English and yet they’re singing and rapping and it is amazing and perfect.

Much like in TV and movies we need more representation of Asian Americans or Asian immigrants in media. 88Rising is a great example of how Hip Hop is influencing other countries around the world and they deserve attention.
