It was cold and it was wet, but hundreds of people stood outside waiting for Yolandi, Ninja and DJ Hi-Tek of Die Antwoord to take the stage on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, their first American television experience.

I expected to be hit in the face with a 2×4 of sound, but the trio calmly took the stage.  I had no idea what I was getting into, but I was excited to be there, as was the crowd who exploded the second the stage lit up.

They took center stage and bowed their heads down as though they were deep in prayer.

Resembling Max from Where The Wild Things Are, Yolandi was wearing what appeared to be a white children’s onesie with graffiti all over it. Ninja was wearing his typical uniform of a white yin yang t-shirt and Pink Floyd Dark Side Of The Moon boxers.  DJ Hi-Tek kept it low-key wearing a monster mask and regular clothes. Apparently, there can only be so much weird on a stage.

Their song “Enter The Ninja” began with a very slow chorus intro while Yolandi and Ninja began a dance they made famous on the internet:

I, I, I
I am your butterfly
I need your protection
Be my samurai

On a personal note, I hardly think Yolandi needs protection from anything.  She’s got a seriously fierce edge and seems like the sort of chick that would knife you in an alley had you tried to steal her purse. Not that Ninja lacks in that area either.

Up close and personal, I found myself thinking about how thin his legs were. I suppose there’s better things to wonder when you’re watching South Africa’s prime hip-hop trio perform for the first time, but none of them came to me.

However, this was not what was on everyone else’s mind.  After the performance of ”Enter The Ninja” ended, the band returned to the stage to perform a couple more songs including “Wat Kyk Jy.” The lovely Yolandi returned in gold lamé pants and a cut-off top that showed her stellar abs and promised a peak at her boobs.

That’s when men and women alike started to chatter about how they wanted to bang Yolandi.  I have no idea what that fantasy would be like, but I bet it includes your very own punch to the face, much like their music.

For being a relatively unknown hip-hop group they were excellent on stage and had I tossed back a few before hand, the show might have been just a little more awesome.  Or like Yolandi says, “Be Happy. F*** you in the face.”

The South African rave-rappers, Die Antwoord recently updated their website featuring just one picture and a countdown clock.

They removed all the links and what’s left is mysterious and thought-provoking to say the least. But in terms of the countdown clock, what is it exactly counting down to? I guess we’ll find out in less than a month, but until then there are numerous speculations buzzing around the interweb.

Well the photo on Die Antwoords website is the cover art of their upcoming album $O$, which is set to be released via Cherrytree / Interscope. The best guess that has surfaced is that the countdown is leading to the release date of their album, October 12. Apparently, the $O$ album is a reworked version of the same album that was initially available on the band’s website earlier this year.

Other speculations revolving around the countdown is that the band is going to release a new single off the album or possibly a video. But whose to say, your guess is as good as mine.

By the way, do you remember when The Killers did something similar to this? I thought it was a let down when the clock read 00 : 00 : 00 and nothing happened. I hope Die Antwoord delievers, I’m counting on it.
