Dead By Sunrise recently finished filming videos for the songs “Crawl Back In” and “Let Down” with director P.R. Brown (Slipknot, Korn, Godsmack, Avenged Sevenfold). Both songs will appear on the band’s debut album, “Out Of Ashes”, which is scheduled for release on October 13.

Bennington began working on Dead By Sunrise back in 2006, explaining, “I came up with a few songs that felt and sounded really good, but I knew they weren’t right stylistically for Linkin Park. They were darker and moodier than anything I’d come up with for the band. So I decided to work on them on my own rather than turn them over and have them transformed into Linkin Park tracks.”

The band, which is Bennington on vocals, guitarists Ryan Shuck and Amir Derakh (from ORGY/JULIEN-K), bassist Brandon Belsky, drummer Elias Anda (also from JULIEN-K), and keyboardist Anthony Valcic.

“I came up with the band name because in the beginnings of making this album, I was partying … we’ll call it partying. It wasn’t much fun, but we partied a lot. And there was a lot of times where I was kind of in a really self-destructive place, and sometimes it felt like you weren’t sure if you were going to make it to the next day,” he explained. “The name kind of evolved from that lifestyle, and the title of the record, Out of Ashes, is kind of coming out of that self-destructive path I was on, and rising from the ashes, so to speak.”

“My life was falling apart in many ways that I was writing about on this record in terms of getting divorced, in terms of diving very hard into alcohol and drugs throughout this process,” he said of his 2005 split from his wife of nine years.

In the first single from Dead By Sunrise “Crawl Back In,” Bennington sings about how his struggles helped him rise to international fame with Linkin Park, fueling the raw emotion behind his lyrics and vocals. “[It's] literally about [how] being an alcoholic and a drug addict has paid off for me in many ways,” he said. “I have been able to tap into all the negative things that can happen to me throughout my life by numbing myself to the pain so to speak and kind of being able to vent it through my music.”

Dead By Sunrise, formed in 2006, also features guitarists Ryan Shuck and Amir Derakh of 90s synth-rock act Orgy and electro-metal band Julien-K, drummer Elias Anda (also from Julien-K), bassist Brandon Belsky, and keyboardist Anthony Valcic. Out of Ashes was produced by Howard Benson (Mötorhead, My Chemical Romance) and has a tentative September release date.
