When you hear “you’re going to see Weezer tonight in the courtyard of a dive hotel in Hollywood,” there’s a certain expectation. But you have to shake that off, because sometimes the people of AXE really impress. Like tonight when they brought us Weezer at the Dunes Inn Motel on Sunset.

At a VIP party with an open bar, you can sometimes experience a little “disinterest” among the guests. Before the show tonight, it was no different. But when Weezer took the stage suddenly with a rendition of “Hash Pipe,” the crowd was stunned, then delighted, and by the second verse was singing every last word. While standing around we were immersed by the mania of the massive crowd.

Somehow, you want to measure a band by the person introducing them and tonight that was alright. Hurley, Jorge Garcia from Lost, whom also covers Weezer’s CD introduced the band. But that’s not all. A few songs into the set, Rivers called Jorge back on stage for “Perfect Situation” (which Jorge sang most of.) Rivers basically sang half of the song before he left the stage, ran through the crowd, past the bar and out onto Sunset Blvd., all while belting out his part of the song.

Yes, he eventually came back. After he blew the crowd’s collective mind. (Who knew the wireless microphone had that kind of range?)

The band knew what they were up to — playing on the emotions of the crowd, and playing hit after hit. After one song, Rivers cracked a smile, leaned into the microphone and delivered the following:

“We’re going to bring some friends up here tonight. They’re called My Chemical Romance.”

What?

Sometimes, you hope someone slaps you in the face just to make sure you’re making something up. But this was not one of those times. My Chemical Romance really did take the stage with Weezer and the two bands killed any version of “My Name Is Jonas” you’ve ever heard.

Honestly, it would be easy to rag on the show by assuming that it is some sort of corporate-sponsored showcase, but we can’t. The band performed for this adoring audience without a care in the world. Hopefully their excellent sets will be what drives people to buy Hurley and if that doesn’t work we hope people open their ears and realize that Weezer is a great live band (with an excellent new album.)
