You know, I’m starting to wonder if KROQ enthusiast Vincent wasn’t, in fact, listening to MARS FM more often than he was tuning into 106.7 FM. No doubt, judging by his suggestions which we’re rolling out this week he had to have been quite a fan of that particularly awesome radio ranch as well…and who wasn’t?!?

Today’s flashback was always fun playing on THE ROQ though ’cause not only did I love the ridiculousness of it there was also the added bonus of people either going bananas and loving hearing it on the radio or the haters really super hating it.

I mean, I can list a ton of songs I wish KROQ had never touched (but I won’t…today…) and I know how it is hearing something you think is WAY out of place, but this wasn’t. At least not when it was new in 1992…

Sluggo Checks Out The First Of 3 Sold Out Coldplay Shows At The Hollywood Bowl

Coldplay’s first of three sold out Hollywood Bowl shows Tuesday night could be sliced and diced to an 1/8th as great and it would still mean we’re in for a rockin’ good time at our own little fiesta and weenie roaster this Saturday.

Seeing Coldplay 11 years ago at Radio City Music Hall for one of their first truly big U.S. nights I was struck by how solid and genuinely enthusiastic they were, so it’s especially satisfying to see in person what a decade of growth they’ve achieved. While some bands strive to even sound like their own records, Chris, Jon, Will and Guy take the chance of re-working their own standards and do so with consummate skill and mastery.

Shit – that sounds fairly high brow, but it was the Hollywood Bowl after all. Mr. Martin was clearly enjoying himself as were his band mates and the F bombs were flying as were plenty of perfectly loud, hard rock interludes between the cool down, chill out sets. The pre-encore 70 minutes flew by. Robert Downey Jr. shoulda stayed around for it! He had clearly been having a good time up ’til then – rockin’ and boppin’ along dead center in the crowd.

This is a picture of Patrick btw who wasn’t attending his first ever rock concert (!) but it was one he had really been looking forward to seeing. I happen to overhear him ask some of the very cool Bowl Staff if they might be able to procure him a copy of the set list (just to really make his brother who couldn’t attend ’cause he had finals on Wednesday even more jealous). Patrick asked for this awesome souvenir even before the very entertaining Pierces took the stage and asked again when Metronomy (who rocked it damn well!) were on stage.

Patrick’s persistence paid off and the always cool Coldplay not only made his night but all of us who were sitting around watching this mini drama unfold. Well done, dude! And how cool is it that even the light cues are on the list! Nice!!!

Even before he suggested today’s flashback clip I had been thinking about playing it for you, but I couldn’t remember for sure if we had actually played it.

I *THINK* it was on a cart (on the wall behind you – something only Tami Heide would understand) but then Vincent mentioned how much Jed used to say he loved this song whenever he played it on the air, so…

Well, alright, we can tell you this much – this week’s flashback videos here on KROQ.com were all suggested by Vincent (please smoke!) and KROQ’s Bean stamped his stamp of Bean Approval on all of them (and then he blew up a small island nation somewhere in the far western reaches of Ma Earth).

Today’s Vincent pick was instantly one of my favorites when KROQ first started playing it circa 1990 (and was written by Neil Young!) and while it has sort of dropped off the earth of late I’ve never stopped listening to it – and here’s your chance to do it too!

Anaweighs, a few minutes ago (nearly a year in mere mortal time) this always cool FELLA posted a batch of suggestions for these har daily KROQ videos and we all agreed here in the Mother Ship of ROQ that they were good. Damn good.

Then another planet came along that we had to destroy and posting Vincent’s selections kept getting postponed…til this week.

His first pick is the classic Orbital video that really hypnotized me when I first saw it (the second, third and fifth times too, but not so much the 4th time) and the second pick has some weird in-house history with the narrative being replaced by our own Rodney Upon The Roq reminiscing over the days of bottom-free iced tea at Pennyfeathers.

Enjoy! And someone wake Vincent up if he’s passed out on the floor again…

Sluggo’s Video Of The Day: Berlin “You Don’t Know”

It’s turned into something of an 80′s week here on the flashback thing (a whopping ten years prior to the 90s!) but next week we’ll dig deep into the 90′s vaults. Or will we?!? (DRAMATIC CHIPMUNK!).

Most every single song I’ve posted here (except the new ones) I’ve played at one time or another on The Roq, but today’s is a glaring exception.

Berlin is playing the House of Blues in Anaheim tomorrow night (might still be some tickets left…) and so I wanted to throw you this one since it’s my favorite of theirs. I had no idea it was ever ‘properly’ released, complete with a ‘Big Hair, moody fellows, lots-of-blue-light’ video clip.

Look past that and dig this great, depressed, new wave tinged downer which, turns out, you might recall hearing on KROQ or MTV and not just in my car that time I picked you up and we drove around all night trying to decide whether or not to go to Vegas…

Sluggo’s Video Of The Day: Miike Snow “Paddling Out” & Madness “House Of Fun”

I’ve played the trio of Miike Snow and their song “Paddling Out” on KROQ as a ‘joq choice’ and when filling in for Jed Der Pudding Fish recently on Out of Order.

I’ve listened to it many times driving around Los Angeles and felt you should know they’ll be at the El Rey tonight (where another of my current favorite bands Band Of Skulls played a sold out show last night). Mighty bra-zeer video for it too. They’re playing the Coachella Saturdays too, btw.

Speaking of Coachella, big draw Madness hit Club Nokia last night for a quickie and it’s given me a great flimsy excuse to bust out a song I used to LOVE playing on KROQ.

It’s nearly impossible to come to an agreement with any lovers of these guys as to their best song (though I would throw in “Night Boat to Cairo”, “Baggy Trousers” and the 7″ single version of the self-named “Madness”) but this one has been a favorite of mine since the first time I saw the video nearly 3,826 years ago.
