L.A. Rising: A Fantastic Show (Even After Getting Lost After the Show In The War Zone Around The Coliseum.)

“F**k you I won’t do what you tell me.” Except that part about not starting fires at the Coliseum. Apparently, then, we have to do what they tell us.

Rise Against. Muse. Rage. Saturday night the bands went off. All three bands were fantastic. To avoid a 90,000 person mosh pit they split up the floor into 9 areas. Each of the 9 had a pit, but it worked perfectly to make sure things didn’t get out of control. And if you were planning on committing a crime, this past Saturday night was your window of opportunity as ALL cops from within a hundred mile radius were there, standing by, waiting for…whatever.

Then, after the show, driving around lost near the Coliseum was not so fantastic. That part of town, which closely resembles Afghanistan, just before we attacked, is a little sketchy. After a lovely 45 minute tour of where all of L.A. throws it’s trash, we made it safely home. Not enough? Watch the bonfire in the pit.

[Live Blog] L.A. Rising: Rage Against The Machine, Muse, & Rise Against Will Rock Coliseum[Photo Gallery] L.A. Rising: Rage…

In an interview with Kevin & Bean earlier this month, Tom Morello of Rage Against The Machine said that Rage hadn’t played a proper show in Los Angeles since 1999.

So what do you do when you want to play an awesome, seminal show and you are as massive as Rage? You organize your own, make it a festival setting with your favorite bands (like Muse, Rise Against, Ms.Lauryn Hill, Immortal Technique, and El Gran Silencio) and give it a righteous name like L.A. Rising.

Right now, KROQ is at the Coliseum live blogging the first ever L.A Rising. Check back here for live show reviews, great pictures of the event, backstage reports, and maybe some embarrassing confessions.

12:06am:

Frown. Show’s over, kids. You all are surprisingly good looking in the bright lights. Now where we drinking?

It’s so good & you know you want more.

Photos from the L.A. Rising Pre-Show BBQ with Rage Against The Machine, Muse and Rise Against. KROQ winners came to the Coliseum a day before L.A. Rising for a private BBQ. They were unaware of what their day had in store for them – which included watching 4-6 songs from each of the 3 bands during their soundcheck, members of Rage Against The Machine and Rise Against stopping by the BBQ to take photos, sign autographs and hang out with fans, and scoring a t-shirt from each of the bands.

Big thanks to the bands and their labels who made this possible.

L.A. Rising – featuring Rage Against The Machine, Muse, Rise Against and more is taking place this Saturday at the LA Coliseum in Downtown LA. It’ll be the first official Rage show in about 10 years (not including last year’s show protesting SB-1070) and is the first time many of these artists will have played together.

We now have the set times for the show so you can plan your day accordingly. Tickets are also still available for the show, get them here.

Get the set times and watch Rage’s practice set.

Rage Against the Machine preparing for LA RisingRage Against the Machine preparing for LA Rising

I hope you’re ready! The clock is ticking and there is less than a few days until LA’s biggest rock festival. Rage Against the Machine, Muse, Rise Against and others are getting set to invade the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum on Saturday. If you don’t have your tickets yet, you better hurry. There are still some tickets left (get them here), cause if you think you’ll be getting them at the door, be ready for some madness.

Every band on the bill gonna tear the house down, but I gotta say when the guys from Rage Against the Machine step on stage you will never be the same. The last time the band played a large show in LA was back in ’99 and who knows when or if this opportunity will come by again. Do yourself a favor and be at THIS show. If you have to rob a bank, get on it.

Watch how Rage is getting ready for Saturday.

Listeners calling in for LA Rising Tickets.

Here’s the thing. LA Rising may just be the biggest show in the history of concerts. Carmaggedon, Sharmaggedon! This is gonna be the biggest thing to hit LA.

How do I know this, you ask? All this week, we’ve been giving out tickets to LA Rising and access to a private BBQ with the bands and it seems like you guys and gals really want these tickets. In an hour, us hard-working phone-ops go through approx 100-200 calls, even when we aren’t giving anything out! So you can imagine the amount of calls we get when the song you were listening for plays.

It’s not the end of the world if you don’t get tickets to LA Rising. But I also understand that everyone needs to be at this show, especially after Timmy C told Kevin and Bean it may be the last Rage show ever. So if you’re not going to the show, please enjoy the following page of just some of the things callers will say/do for LA rising tickets.

As the narrator will tell you, Rage Against The Machine has teamed up with Goldenvoice, the brains and brawn behind Coachella. Among the many reasons for this partnership is Goldenvoice’s technical prowess. They’re bringing the ginormous video screens and million-watt sounds system to the Coliseum.

It’s been eleven years since the Coliseum has hosted a big rock show. And, it’s been eleven years since Rage Against The Machine has played a proper show here in L.A.

In this edition of Guerilla Video, the boys familiarize themselves with the historic venue, this time as curator of the L.A. Rising festival on July 30, 2011. Between the meetings and photo shoots, they squeeze in a little exercise…Watch Rage tour the Coliseum and play a little football

When navigating the hormonally-induced rage and insecure emotionalism of the average teenage experience, mid-’90s pubescent Angelenos were lucky to sublimate their first socially-enlightened stirrings with a powerhouse local band like Rage Against The Machine .

This is actually, probably, the last show we're going to play.

Likewise, Rage Against The Machine embodied the transformative, dynamic energy of a city in its own “teen” years–Los Angeles. Rage’s intense rock polemic, combined with their brash political overtones of old-school punk, underground hip-hop, and cocksure metal easily made them both a representation of fearless youthful revolution and unmitigated hope for the future.

No matter what the corporate drones would perpetually decide to dictate.

Twenty years after all four members of Rage first met, a more “taut” Rage Against The Machine are still diehards to their city of origin, and as evidenced by the July 30th début of Los Angeles music festival L.A. Rising, still possess the inspired ideas that galvanized a generation of like-minded counter-culture underdogs.

Three-quarters of Rage Against The Machine sat down and schooled Kevin & Bean about starting out in Los Angeles from “humble” beginnings, the vision behind L.A. Rising, and how they might never play another show again.

In the summer of 2007, a friend and fellow music lover of mine asked if I was interested in seeing Muse down at San Diego’s Street Scene festival.  I was hesitant due to monetary instability, but like a stroke of clairvoyance I had a feeling I would forever regret my decision if I stayed behind.  My intuitions were right.  Muse played a set that I can only describe as otherworldly.  They were perfect.  Possibly better than perfect.  I’ve seen Muse twice since and both shows were equally fulfilling, but like your first kiss that show in San Diego left an indelible impression on me I will never forget.  I’ve since abided by this rule – never let financial struggles deprave you of music.

I’ve created my top 10 Muse songs in prep for LA Rising on July 30th, and I’m calling all Muse fanatics to swap and share theirs with me.

Check out my top 10 Muse songs and share yours here.

rockthebells rage [Lists] My Top 10 Rage Against The Machine Songs

It was 2007 and the world had already grown accustomed to Rage Against the Machine‘s uncharacteristic silence. The site was San Bernardino’s Glen Helen Pavilion (now named San Manuel Amphitheater) and the occasion was Rock the Bells. I was 20 years-old. Already an avid and embedded Rage fan by then, I couldn’t help but feel both a state of disbelief and gratitude for having the opportunity to experience a reunion of such epic proportions. It was like having one of your favorite athletes return from years of retirement and put on a show as if they had never left.

The energy in that place was chaotically palpable in a myriad of forms, 30-man mosh pits and fires of death were prevalent among a ubiquitous fragrance of pepper spray.  It was all terrifyingly fitting for a Rage Against the Machine concert that had been dormant for several years – a sonic volcano that erupted before 50,000 people who had been starving for this moment. A day I will never forget, and anticipate reliving (perhaps without the fires of death) at LA Rising July 30th.
