Neck Of The Woods marks the band’s first album since 2009 and see’s the group evolving upon an already heavy sound. Often compared to groups like The Smashing Pumpkins and My Bloody Valentine, Silversun Pickups add on to their distorted sound by adding thick synthesizer layers effectively fusing both new and old sounds that made the group a hit in the first place.

The album is available for a full length stream and is sure to be on year end lists as one of the top albums. Coming in at 59 minutes, this is the longest album that the group has produced to date with a total of 11 tracks.

Neck Of The Woods was produced by Jacknife Lee (Snow Patrol/U2) and was released via Dangerbird Records.

To celebrate the band’s new release, the foursome joined 300 fans and friends in the Red Bull Sound Space at KROQ for a live performance and Q&A. Frontman Brian Aubert gave some insight into the recording process and how the record differs from previous Silversun Pickups albums. He also shared his thoughts on the loss of Beastie Boys’ Adam Yauch.

Corbett is discussing the Silversun Pickups’ new album Neck of The Woods which she listened to in the car on the way over to the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater. “There’s a dead spot in it where the music stops. And then there’s like a couple of seconds and then it picks up again. Do you know, as a DJ, how much a heart attack that gives me when I play it on the air?”

Frontman Brian Aubert–who has been interviewed by Corbett extensively before and joked at the beginning of the interview that all their interviews would be on audiobook soon– replied in his usual light-hearted way: ”Totally. That’s why I put it in there.”

“Did you do that on purpose to just kill all of the DJs?,” laughed Kat. ”We just have a problem with people that play music,” said Aubert jokingly.

Silversun Pickups Interview

A Weenie Roast favorite that has played the show four times, the band has also come as spectators including camping out in the nosebleed seats on the lawn.

After some side conversation from the band, recognition of all the family they had at the show that day, and a joke that their whole Weenie Roast set will include them playing their Pikel EP to “three people,” Aubert gave a shout out to the amazing Garbage show earlier in the day.

“Garbage was amazing. Did you guys see Garbage? Shirley Manson is immortal…She’s literally made of immortal things.”

“She’s adorable,” replied bassist Nikki Monninger. Corbett responded that everyone aspired to be like Manson.

“You know what’s so weird? I’m going to say it right now: I am Shirley Manson,” joked Aubert. “Have you ever seen her and I in the same area? I am her. So thanks for enjoying the Garbage show and now I’m going to be Brian.”

Silversun Pickups’ will also be celebrating the release of Neck of the Woods on May 8th with an exclusive show at the KROQ Red Bull Sound Space.

“It feels like it, yeah…The high school reunion happens on Facebook right before we play these things because all the people I went to high school with are hitting me up,” said Noodles. “And I love them all, so it’s really hard to say no.”

Working on their ninth album, Days Go By, which is set to be released on June 26th, the band said that this year marks the 20th anniversary of their second album Igniton, that two years from now will be the 25th anniversary of their self-titled début album, and the 20th anniversary of their breakout album Smash.

“The first time we played this [Weenie Roast], I was still a janitor,” recollected Noodles. “I still had my job as a janitor…I’m sure to about a third of the kids I was the cool janitor. I’m sure to about a third of the kids I was the a-hole janitor. And then, a third of the kids didn’t even know who I was.”

The Offspring Interview

Last week, the band played a show for the fans at Long Beach’s tiny Alex’s Bar, the “fangbanger” bar from the vampire-themed television show True Blood and a place that would have been huge to play for Offspring pre-Smash.

“It was so much fun. This year is the 20th anniversary of our second record, Ignition, which came out right before Smash,” said the Offspring. “And so we did that in it’s entirety…and then we drank a bunch of beer and then played a bunch of other songs.

“All I know is I do this pogo thing at the end of Self-Esteem,” continued Noodles when asked about the rumored drunken state the band was in. “That was I think the second to the last song we did and I was falling over while I’m doing the pogo and I had to stop doing it. I was afraid I was going to fall over into the drum kit.”

With their many hits and years of playing music, Corbett asked the band how they develop a setlist and if they get sick of playing a song.

“It’s fun to get out there and play any of these for the fans,” said Holland. “We feed off the energy of the fans. I think you go through a phase where you are kind of sick of a song and I think you go past that and it becomes part of you.”

“And especially because the audience reacts so great to it every night, it makes it fun. We really never get to that point.”

NBC Los Angeles visited our studios and sat down with Kat, who described the effect Adam and the Beastie Boys had on the music industry, his legacy and their relationship with KROQ throughout the years. “They were the soundtrack to my life for sure, and I know many others,” Kat explained. “This is the worst part of my job, a day like today, because you realize that people you’ve grown up with are now leaving us much too young.”

When asked what the Beasties effect on music was, Kat responded, “For me and a lot of my friends, they brought hip hop to the suburbs. That was a huge thing because back then hip hop was very underground. They were in the beginning of really letting the world experience hip hop. Between fashion and music, they had this kind of street sensibility. They put it out there and the kids just went nuts. Everybody had a copy of License To Ill in their collection.”

“Here’s a band that started off as a hardcore punk band, then they moved into hip hop and they started off as boys making boy music and saying naughty things, but they really evolved. They grew into men,” Kat continued. “They made these fantastic beats and they really brought street music to a level where the masses could enjoy it.”

“KROQ and The Beastie Boys have been together and holding hands throughout the years. The Beastie Boys are one of the foundations of alternative music. Alternative music has this hip hop background to it and that’s where The Beastie Boys came from. They’re one brick in the wall of alternative music that the legs stand on here at KROQ. We have a huge history.”

During an hour-long block of Beastie Boys songs earlier today, Kat also spoke with Justin Warfield from She Wants Revenge, who described the situation as “it’s like one of our Beatles died… he was the George Harrison of the Beasties.”

“There definitely would have been no She Wants Revenge had it not been for the Beastie Boys. It was Adam and I growing up, two Jewish kids into hip hop in the Valley.” He also spoke about being a youth in 1990, playing basketball and skateboarding with MCA and Ad-Rock. Nestled in a private oasis just blocks away from the festival grounds lies the KROQ Coachella House - complete with pool, BBQ, beautiful women and some pretty huge bands.

Blues-rock duo The Black Keys are one of the biggest rock bands in the world right now. They’ve been together for “fifteen years,” but “ten years officially” according to frontman Dan Auerbach when he joined Stryker on the interview couch.

When asked if there was ever a moment when The Black Keys didn’t want to play music, Auerbach replied, “No, never, we’ve always had a lot of fun playing music. That’s why we’re still together.”

“Everything that I’ve done in the last ten years has been sort of based around music,” the frontman continued. “All the people I meet is because I play music. It’s really a kind of a crazy life.”

Although Auerbach admitted that the band “have a couple weeks booked to go into the studio in a few months just to see what happens,” the Tennessee-based musician has been working with other artists like Costa Mesa’s The Growlers, Jeff the Brotherhood, and Los Angeles’ Hanni El Khatib.

When Stryker asked Auerbach why he liked living in Nashville so much, the Akron, Ohio-born musicians said that he “didn’t want to move to a big city” because he “grew up in a small town,” but “wanted that feel except with more options.”

Auerbach talked about the “meat and three” BBQ option, the “magical” Bourbon well that you throw a “quarter” into and “get ripped,” the cheap gas, and the “free Wonderbread.”

And when asked what his first music purchase was?

“Kriss Kross or Rico Suave or something.”

The twilight is creeping on the Coachella Valley and the hellish winds are picking up; so much so, that British band, Band of Skulls, might not play their hit single “The Devil Takes Care of His Own” on the stage. The song was recently on Stryker’s 4:20 and the Joq got to sit down with the band, starting off the interview asking them if they would rather play in the scorching heat or have mud thrown at them to which the band (who played Coachella in 2010 for the first time) answered that each had their own benefits.

Bassist Emma Richardson was asked what it was like to be a girl in a band with two other guys to which she answered, “It’s fun actually. You’d be surprised.” Frontman Russell Marsden chimed in, “There’s an added politeness. The humor stays polite. There’s a level of decorum which is maintained.”

Stryker speculated whether or not the band would play, saying he didn’t want them to get electrocuted, and Marsden said cheekily, “Could be a dramatic ending.”

“What do you call that? Circus disco moombahton hip-hop?,” said an audience member after the awesome, wild Wallpaper. show. “No, maybe Tropicalia electro-hop,” replied her friend. “Whatever you call it, it was f**king great,” replied the audience member.

After frontman Reed exclaimed that “the best alcohol is free alcohol,” Wallpaper. brought the wind gods of the Coachella Valley to their knees with a lively set complete with choreographed dancing, neon pants with Palm Springs designs, metallic boots, and crazy conga drumming while playing “2 Pair of Shades,” “F**king Best Song Ever,” and “Stupidfacedd.”

A tornado burst of wind rushed through the audience mid-set and Reed took it like a star joking hat he was “definitely chewing on dirt,” and that “this is gonna be our last show of all time before we get struck by lightning.”

Stryker sat down with Oakland-grown Wallpaper. a/k/a Ricky Reed of “Stupidfacedd” fame talked to KROQ’s Stryker. When Reed was asked what some of his favorite pop albums, he said, ”Just outside of the last twenty years, the early Michael Jackson records. I know the Thriller record like the back of my hand.”

For Reed, writing a song is about hearing the unique in the normal, “collecting special things from the ether and putting them in there.”

“Writing a song is all about capturing things that you know are special,” Reed elaborated, saying that he wasn’t totally against collaboration but the best music is heartfelt.

Stryker then asked Reed “the best questions that anyone ever asked” him: whether he’d hang out with Oaktown 357 or Rappin’ 4-Tay. Reed’s chose 4-Tay.

Cheeky lead singer from Alex Turner from British band Arctic Monkeys played a melodic acoustic set in an atmospheric situation that he’s probably well-acquainted with: in a chill drizzle. Turner quipped that is shouldn’t be raining and then played a 3-song set on acoustic guitar of “Reckless Serenade,” “Love is a Laserquest,” and “Suck It and See.” At the end his set, the mellow Turner looked at the audience, thanked them, and said, “and the suns even put his hat back on.”

Kasabian was the second band to stop by the KROQ Coachella House. While his bandmates finished setting up for their performance, frontman Sergio Pizzorno made fun of the plastic rain protection on the patio furniture and his tour manager with little T-Rex-like hands.

Kat commented on the band’s fifteenth anniversary and the fact that few know the origins of their name. Linda Kasabian, was one of the Manson family. Sergio said, “She has heard us. She said she was pleasantly surprised.”

First to stop by the house was the man behind M83, Anthony Gonzalez.

When asked what posters adorned his walls as a child, Anthony surprised the crowd with his response. “I grew up with posters of Iron Maiden hanging on my walls.” When asked about his latest album Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming, Gonzalez responded “I just wanted to have fun on this album…and play with all my toys.”

As Kat so eloquently put it, Gonzalez “brought the saxy back.”

The band–often stylized as fun. for the sake of search-ability–has had a lot of “fun” ever since they exploded onto the music scene with their infamous freewheeling single dedicated to the drunken blessings of youth, “We Are Young.”

With the three core members–Ruess, guitarist Jack Antonoff, and multi-instrumentalist Andrew Dost–coming from different bands, fun. has probably succumbed to many a moment where they’ve needed to be carried home.

As their sophomore album is entitled, Some Nights are just like that. During their pre-show interview, fun. talked about a night they fell asleep at a concert, a night that someone barfed, and a night that they met a girl from the future.

“ We like to think that she had it recorded on the moon or in the future. Because it's Janelle Monae and she would have such wonderful future hindsight to be like, 'This song's going to be a hit.'
” Along with their touring band, bass guitarist Nate Harold, vocalist and keyboardist Emily Moore, and drummer Will Noon, fun. played an infectious five-song set, starting with their “favorite song to play,” “Some Nights,” “Walking The Dog,” “Carry On,” “At Least,” and their international hit, “We Are Young,” which features the very futuristic pop-jazz star, Janelle Monae.

A fan in the audience asked the band about working with Monae on their smash-hit song that reached number three on the Billboard Hot 100 and the first rock/alternative song to top the Billboard Hot 100 chart since Coldplay‘s “Viva La Vida” in 2008.

“We didn’t get to hang out with Janelle prior to her recording it,” said Ruess. “Andrew was always a super fan. He’d always play it in the van…Our producer (Jeff Bhasker) ran into Janelle and he played her that song and she freaked out about it and said that she would record it.”

“We like to think that she had it recorded on the moon or in the future,” joked Ruess,”because it’s Janelle Monae and she would have such wonderful future hindsight to be like, ‘This song’s going to be a hit.’”

“ The lady in front of us was standing up on her chair and she barfed and fell backwards and my Dad caught her and shoved her back up.
” “Eventually we went on tour with her and we got to meet her and she’s as in the future as you would possibly think.”

“She loves art and that was always such an awesome thing to have her walk backstage before a show and talk to us and talk about how happy she was that we were making something we believed in and how much she believes in art and everything like that.”

Noted for their almost-theatric musical artistry onstage (Ruess is a big fan of Queen), the band relayed their childhood live show experiences to Corbett when she asked them what their first concert was.

Ruess said that his was a show with Bruce Springsteen which he “dragged” his parents to and “fell asleep a few songs in.” Antonoff saw “Aerosmith with Collective Soul” when it was “right at the moment for Collective Soul that you’d want to see them,” saying that he walked away from the show more of a Collective Soul fan than an Aerosmith fan.

Dost’s story was a bit more grotesque albeit entertaining.

“ And the guy was like, 'What was the last movie that you guys saw?' We're like, 'Schindler's List.' You should have seen his face.
” “Mine was Ringo Starr and His All-Starr Band,” said the musician. “And the lady in front of us was standing up on her chair and she barfed and fell backwards and my Dad caught her and shoved her back up.”

Highlighting their “common thread” of self-affirmed “self-deprecation and humor,” everyone in the audience laughed before the band relayed some of their antics from the day before.

When asked what their favorite song to play was, fun. counted to three and said in unison, “Some Nights.”

“That was not planned, but we did do that actually. Yesterday.” Ruess attested. “We did a television thing and it was something for like what movie we had recently watched.”

“And so we said like the Heartbreak Kid or something, but then we went backstage and we all talked about it before we had to do this impromptu thing and said, ‘On the count of three, say Schindler’s List. And the guy was like, ‘What was the last movie that you guys saw?’ We’re like, ‘Schindler’s List.’ You should have seen his face.”

An allusion to the graphic, yet poignant 1993 film appropriately underscored fun.’s answer to another fan’s questions: What kind of rock bands did you listen to growing up?

“ We talked about Smashing Pumpkins for like three hours yesterday.
” “We were children of the ’90s,” Ruess said before talking about how much he loves Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder.

“We talked about Smashing Pumpkins for like three hours yesterday,” Antonoff interjected. “Just about how important they were to us…Mellon Collie when that came out was a record that changed all of our lives.”

Ruess chimed in and said that they were “kind of obsessed” with Weezer.

“I think Andrew and I were both into like Pinkerton,” said Ruess. “Yeah, that was the first concert I ever attended in high school. They were like forty minutes late on stage and I thought that was so cool.”

One might assume that the creature behind such a voice lives in a fantastical dream world, but prompted by his friendship with interviewer Kat Corbett, the breathy Aubert (Corbett asked him if he was “cleaning his house”) is full of zingy retorts and a mirthful lucidity.

It’s been three years since the release of Silversun Pickups’ last album, Swoon, and most likely the subsequent press rounds, so Aubert quips that he told his publicist he’s using this interview for “practice.”

Two days earlier, Aubert confirmed over Twitter the name and release date of their upcoming album–Neck Of The Woods, which will be released on May 8th.

Despite a new album release being only two months away, Aubert seems more interested in catching up with Corbett than psychoanalyzing what he dubs the “instinctual” details of Neck Of the Woods.

He asks Corbett about her house and her dog. He proposes shots for anytime he says something “serious” in the interview and he connects with Corbett over her recent trip to Kauai (Brian’s family is Hawaiian.)

“ It sounds a little silly when you're actually trying to intellectualize something that's instinctual.
” “It’s been awhile between interviews…The easiest thing to do is kind of give everybody a piece of it,” explained Aubert. “A part of what it means. And then tell the next person another part of what it means. It sounds a little silly when you’re actually trying to intellectualize something that’s instinctual.“

Aubert did dabble in seriousness when he gave some explanation behind the meaning of the album title and the general sound Silversun Pickups is trying to convey in the new material.

Not before joking about the title of his memoir and mocking his basketball skills–which can be seen in a recent Spin shoot.

“Sorry ‘Bout That. Sorry Everybody. Don’t Worry, I’ll Go Away Soon,” replied Aubert when Corbett asked him what the title of his memoir would be. He then laughed, saying that the new Silversun Pickups album could be called, “Whoops or We Tried. Silversun Pickups on their Maybe Next Time Tour.’”

Outing himself as the worst basketball player of the group, Aubert recounted the day of Silversun Pickups’ Spin photoshoot.

“I remember that day because we were losing our mind in the studio,” Aubert recollected. “It was so much fun, so difficult, so super intense because we were doing it really fast.”

“We were just trying to stay on target with things,” explained Aubert. “And sometimes your mind would just snap. We each had like thirty different voices of characters we each would start breaking into. So, it’s like a Sybil record.”

“It was interesting, Kat. I accidentally fell over and my guitar and I was like, ‘Hey. Song One. Let’s go play hockey,’” jested Aubert, who said one of the “thirty different voices” that the band created was an alternate, “hick” Michael Stipe.

“ Part of it was looking back to really early stuff when we started. There was a playfulness and an experimentation that we lost a little bit of along the way.
” While possessing a “horror story” (their lead single is entitled “Bloody Mary” like the woman in the mirror) and the creepy house of their artwork, Aubert said that Neck Of The Woods definitely embodied some of the lightheartedness of their Spin photoshoot.

“Part of it was looking back to really early stuff when we started. There was a playfulness and an experimentation that we lost a little bit of along the way,” confessed Aubert. “And on the Seasick EP, I think you can hear a little bit of that.”

“It was kind of like, ‘Let’s get you back to playing with different drum tones and playing with these pads.’ It sounds like a cool, digital drum thing,” continued Aubert. “Screw the idea of this organic thing that we think we have to live by.”

“And then it was, ‘How do we find the humanity in all that?’ And that’s all we did Kat. And then we played some basketball.”

“ We don't care about singles unlike bands who are a little more calculated and probably way smarter than we are.
” When prompted to list some of his favorite songs off the album, Aubert mentioned two songs called “The Pit” and “Skin Graph” and confessed that the Silversun Pickups were “so happy” that “Bloody Mary” was chosen as their lead radio single because the song is more indicative of their “prettier, dreamier” new sound.

“‘Bloody Mary’ was something that I think we would have wanted to go for,” explained Aubert. “Like there was stuff on our last two albums that lean towards us being certain kind of rockers. There was areas that we could leaned more towards.”

“Like, on our first album, we were all really fond of the song called ‘Rusted Wheel.’ We kind of wanted to explore more of that aspect, I guess in the radio universe, whatever that means.”

“But we figured that’s just not really that landscape anymore,” Aubert admitted. “Get out there and rock hard, rock hard, rock hard, rock hard.”

Silversun Pickups are more interested in their artistry and the finished product of their whole album than making singles or how their songs are edited for radio.

“ We make long songs accidentally. We don't know why.
” “We don’t care about singles unlike bands who are a little more calculated and probably way smarter than we are. I think sometimes they like to lead with singles and all that stuff,” explained Aubert. “We never really give a sh*t about that–or haven’t so far–and so our philosophy has always been. And I guess it still is: We don’t care what single gets chosen and how they want to re-edit.”

“We make long songs accidentally. We don’t know why,” Aubert said, elaborating on the radio editing. “We’ll make a short one when we write one. But you can chop it up and put it on the radio and do whatever you want…As long the album is the way we want it.”

The title of the Silversun Pickups’ new album, Neck Of The Woods, is described by Aubert to have different meanings.

“ It feels like a little bit of a horror movie. This record feels like a horror movie that hasn't been invented and it needs the details of your life.
” “It’s very fringe-y to me,” elaborated Aubert. “But, you’re right, it does have different meanings. I mean, Neck Of The Woods to me sounds sexual. It sounds like a horror movie that’s not around. It sounds like a desire to want to get in but you can’t. Or, a desire to want to pull out something from the center into your fringe.”

“I know everybody’s kind of running around saying it sounds like a horror movie…And it does,” Aubert concluded, mysteriously. “It feels like a little bit of a horror movie. This record feels like a horror movie that hasn’t been invented and it needs the details of your life.”

“And it also kind of reminds me of Wargames for some reason. There’s a little bit of that on this record, I’ve got to admit.”
