Neon Trees Interview

“I have the biggest smile on my face. That was a lot of fun. By the way, you guys made it all hot and sweaty in here,” exclaims KROQ’s Nicole Alvarez after the infectious dance-pop swagger of one of rock’s most fun-loving bands, the Neon Trees, at the Red Bull Sound Space at KROQ.

“It got really moist, really quick,” joked back frontman Tyler Glenn, wiping some sweat from his brow.

The band had just brought the Red Bull Sound Space at KROQ into a frothy frenzy that would soak the t-shirts of even the most dreary–and they did it all while drummer Elaine Bradley was 7-months pregnant.

Bradley, the youngest of 7 children, told Alvarez that she has played drums with wooden spoons, pots, and pans since she was 4-years-old and she doesn’t know how her mother didn’t go “insane.”

“She was a very patient woman.” It obviously passed down to Bradley because despite Bradley’s pregnancy she was still playing drums. While she said she can’t really “lean over and hit,” drumming keeps her in good shape.

“I think she looks pretty good for seven months,” confessed Glenn. It’s hard to believe that the band, full of loving sentiment towards one another (Brandon Campbell gushed about how it was his destiny to play with the super “fun” Neon Trees), ever fought.

Chris Allen and Glenn said that when the band met they were very different people, but now there’s an “underlying current of love.” They don’t “fight” anymore, just get into little bickering arguments.

When it all comes down to it, Neon Trees bring their edgy, soulful electro-rock sound to their audience through the sheer joy they cultivate into a friendly fury onstage.

Alvarez notes that Glenn is one of the more “charismatic frontmen in music now” and Glenn confesses that he’s actually “quiet, shy, and self-deprecating” offstage.

It’s when he’s onstage that everything comes into focus.

“Sometimes I wish the shows just lasted forever,” said Glenn.”But I know we can’t do that.”

We know a plethora of Neon Trees fans that would beg to differ.
