Channeling the frenetic sound of the city into self-described “paranoid electronic pop music,” Alan Wilkis is the main force behind the appropriately-named Big Data. Before Wilkis’ touring band played his sinister-edged synth-pop sounds at the Red Bull Sound Space, Kat Corbett told a mild-mannered Wilkis that his hit song, “Dangerous,” make her feel a little “creepy.”

“Clearly, you’re a little bit paranoid about today’s technology,” she says, later asking Wilkis: “Are you worried the machines are going to take over?”

Wilkis replies reservedly: “I think that they probably will take over eventually. Maybe not in our lifetime. Maybe not so much paranoid as feeling like it’s inevitable and accepting it and trying to figure out how to deal with that.”

He also seems tripped out by getting a Number One song on Billboard’s alt charts. “It’s just very surreal,” Wilkis says, laughing nervously. “I still don’t totally believe it, but I’m trying to believe it.”

What he’s not reserved about? Working with the awesome people in his band (including a drummer he’s know since 8th grade), collabing with people like Joywave and coming up “hip-hop” style, and having one of his favorite producers ever, Los Angeles’ Oliver, do an amazing, almost alien-esque remix of “Dangerous” for Big Data’s recently-released remix EP, 1.6.

With all these awesome collabs and remixes in the works, Big Data has big things coming for their next full-length album. “Everything is written, so now I just have to try to make it sound good. I’m going fast as humanly possible. I promise. I promise.”
