The Red Bull Sound Space at KROQ played host to an intimate performance with Banks on January 20, 2015. The 300-person audience was in for a treat because, according to the LA-native, the show was “like a send-off for this year. I needed to be in a little cave the past few weeks after a year of so many things. I just needed time to rest and this is kind of my first thing back to the world.”
When host Kat Corbett mentioned the whirlwind of a year she had, Banks responded,”I don’t really know how to describe what it feels like just because I was just writing in my room for 10 years. I felt like I was this technicolor flower in this box that nobody saw. For this all to be happening, for you guys to be here, it’s incredible.”
“Every single person has these feelings. It’s not like it’s a good person so your relationship was perfect. Those dynamics that happen with relationships that f**k your heart up… that’s what I write about. That’s what makes me want to write. Everyone is who they are and sometimes you want to change someone, even if they’re a good person, they may not be right for you. It doesn’t mean they’re bad.”
“My lyrics are human. It’s not about if somebody was not good and it’s about feeling empowered in your own everything. Your own weaknesses and your own anger. Anything that makes you feel like ‘I wish I wasn’t this,’ that’s what you should f**king love.”
Banks then went on to play an amazing 6-song set, including her tracks “Alibi,” “Brain,” “Change,” “Stick,” “Waiting Game” and “Beggin For Thread.” This was also the first time that “Waiting Game” had been performed acoustic.
