Bi-continental Brits, Band of Skulls, call California their second home but only recently felt their first earthquake: the Shamrock Shake. “It’s like a health juice or a dance,” quipped frontman Russell Marsden. “Can we say that? They should do a Jamba Juice.”

“We were all asleep,” recalls Marsden. “It was a our first earthquake, you know? I feel much more at home now. I used to like it here. Now I love it.” The lone female in the trio, Emma Richardson, is quick to clarify that the band was in “separate rooms” and “separate beds.”

The dark and bluesy heavy-hitting indie-rock band are simultaneously charming and sardonic Brit and bad-ass rockstars. A member of the audience gushes over how Marsden gave him a guitar pick at SXSW, trying to hang it back. “Good, I have three more,” he responds cheekily.

In an interview with Stryker before their performance at the Red Bull Sound Space, the band talked about SXSW, what it’s like to play “overseas,” catching up with their lives, and their love of Lucha Va Voom.

“It’s always a bit of a crazy place, but we had a good time,” said Marsden of SXSW. “Met some nice people. And I think on a whole everyone had a good time, even though there was some tragedy there this year. I hope that doesn’t spoil the fun for the future. I hope we can carry on and people can still have a great time.”

Despite being recognized as a “new” band, Band of Skulls have actually been cultivating their sexy sound for a long time, starting with 2009’s Baby Darling Doll Face Honey. The band themselves have been together for ten years. When asked about what it’s like to play overseas versus the United States, Marsden said, “this is overseas for us.”

“It takes a long time to play all the cities in America,” explained Marsden further. “North America, Canada, etc. It takes longer and you’re away from home for longer, so when you get back, people have babies and things have changed. And you’re the same, you know, you’ve just been out playing the same songs. It’s more about when you get home trying to regroup and not be strange.”

“This is our second home,” said the band about Los Angeles. “We did our first gigs in the States here. We started working on our new record here, sort of secretly, and we mixed the record here. So it’s our second home. It’s official.”
