Trainspotting Director Danny Boyle Keeps His Oscar Statue in a Strange Place

"You cannot look at it every day. It's really terrifying."

By Jay Tilles

Danny Boyle thinks his Oscar is just too much bling. The Academy Award-winning director joined Kevin & Bean in-studio this morning (Mar. 7) to discuss T2: Trainspotting, the long-awaited follow-up to the 1996 hit film.

Before Boyle could even say hello, Bean made it a point to announce he was an award-winning director and questioned why he wasn’t showing off his Oscar statue more prominently. “I’m very disappointed you don’t wear your Oscar on a chain around your neck,” joked Bean. “I think that’s what I would do. You never want people to forget that you did that.”

“I had it out at home for a bit after we got them,” said Boyle of the golden statue. “You cannot look at it every day. It’s really terrifying. ‘Cause it’s not the kind of thing you can ignore and not look at. It’s very eye-catching.” So where does he keep this prized possession? “It’s under the bed,” he said knowing his interviewers would soon be mocking him. “Under the bed, in a box. It’s not just thrown under the bed. When it’s out, it’s just kind of mesmerizing and you think ‘Oh my God I’ll never do that again. Is it all over?” Superstitiously, Boyle fears the award may signify he’s peaked, never to repeat the success of Slum Dog Millionaire for which he earned the award.

During the nearly 30-minute interview, Boyle also mentioned that he turned down the opportunity to direct the horror film, Se7en. David Fincher ultimately directed the hit film.” Listen to the full interview below.

Opening in select theaters March 17 and opening wider Friday, March 31, T2 Trainspotting reunites Boyle with the original cast of the 1996 film.
