The campaign has already collected over $800,000

After receiving a racist comment on one of his social media accounts, actor Kal Penn (Harold & Kumar, Designated Survivor) launched a crowdfunding campaign a few days ago that has raised over $800,000 so far. The campaign benefits the International Rescue Committee whose aim is to save refugee families in crisis.

After posting a text exchange between him and a friend to Instagram, a user commented that “you don’t belong in America anyways.” Penn, who was born in Montclair, NJ to Indian immigrant parents, decided to take positive action and launched this campaign. It received $30,000 in the first day aloneĀ and now has over 20,000 donors.

Earlier this morning, Penn spoke with The Kevin & Bean Show.

“I think it was the combination of the fact that now you’ve got Trump administration officials talking like this guy, who belongs here and who doesn’t belong here, and I just thought, ‘I feel like most of us disagree with this.’ Whether you’re a democrat or republican is irrelevant in this conversation. There are so many young evangelicals and conservatives who have also been standing up against this ban. I was like, ‘Maybe we can turn this into something good.'”
