Typically, PETA’s “I’d Rather Go Naked” campaign feature female vegetarians who prefer their own skin to fur, but AFI’s Davey Havok is baring all in a new poster for the animal welfare organization.
Rather than take a stand against fur, Havok wants to raise awareness about leather. Standing in the nude, he grasps a microphone stand while his nether regions remain in shadow. “I’d Rather Go Naked Than Wear Leather. Rock the Skin You Were Born In. Let Animals Keep Theirs,” the ad reads.
In a video he made as part of the campaign, Havok explains, “I was raised on rock ‘n’ roll, like many people, and the leather jacket was a part of that culture. But no article of clothing, feeling of confidence, or otherness is worth the torture or the murder of an innocent creature.”
Leather is a by-product of the meat, and making it has a negative impact on the environment. “[I]f you are wearing leather whilst not eating animals, you’re still contributing to the destruction of the ecosphere,” he says.
