Metallica has shared a touching video from Ray Burton, the father of the band’s late bassist Cliff Burton, on the 30th anniversary of his death. In addition, the Burton family launched Facebook and Instagram pages in his memory.

Burton was tragically killed in a bus accident on September 27, 1986, when the band was travelling through Sweden on a tour to support their album Master of Puppets.

“I just want to talk to you very briefly about the anniversary coming up of the accident that took Cliff away from us,” Ray Burton says in the video. “It’ll be a little history. Some of it is from the beginning when Cliff was born in 1962 and I will try to convey some things that I found extremely loving of the young man. He was quite a young man to say the least.”

“From a very, very young age he showed his mother and me examples that he was pretty extraordinary—even as a young child in school,” Burton adds.

To remember the late bassist, the family is inviting fans to share their tributes on the new Facebook page set up in his memory, Cliff Burton Family.

“We would like your comments, if you have photographs or want to play music, or give the old what-do-you-call-it sign” says Burton. “We just want to wish you the best and have a happy new year.”
