Prophets of Rage promised to “Make America Rage Again,” spinning Donald Trump’s campaign slogan into a political-minded protest. But Tom Morello isn’t stopping short at the band’s potential to spread that message.
Morello recorded an opening to “Old Man Trump,” a Woody Guthrie protest song folk singer-songwriter Ryan Harvey covered with Ani DiFranco, according to Rolling Stone.
“When it comes to race relations, he’s like an old-school segregationist,” Morello says in the intro. “When it comes to foreign policy, he’s like an old-school napalmist. When it comes to women’s issues, he’s like a frat-house rapist. So, let’s not elect that guy, and I want you to stand up against Old Man Trump, too. Not just him, but the history that he represents and the policies that he put forward.”
Guthrie wrote the protest song, which criticized “Old Man Trump,” soon after signing a lease in 1950 for a Brooklyn apartment owned by none other than Donald’s father Fred C. Trump. “He thought that Fred Trump was one who stirs up racial hate, and implicitly profits from it,” Guthrie scholar Will Kaufman told The New York Times.
For Morello and others opposed to Trump, it seems the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.
