Shirley Manson, Butch Vig, and Steve Marker from Garbage stopped by The Kevin & Bean Show this morning to world premiere their new song “Empty,” which you can listen to above. The band then stuck around to chat about their forthcoming album Strange Little Birds (out June 16) and their upcoming tour kicking off this summer.
According to Vig, the recording process for this record was pretty easy. “We felt like we had a lot of momentum after we did the Not Your Kind Of People Tour, and we kind of worked on it in waves. Steve and Duke would fly in, we’d work for 2 weeks, then we’d take a couple of weeks off. We sort of did that over a good year and a half or so.”
“It was interesting because we wanted to make a different sounding album too so I think maybe that’s why it took a little longer,” he continued. “Some of the songs… we thought they were going to go one way, then they went another way. I think we’re really happy with how the record turned out.”

Bean asked Manson what she feels at this point in her life she has to say that she hasn’t said before. “It’s funny you should say that,” said Manson, “because normally I sort of just come to the studio with the band and we see what happens. In this regard though, on this record, I definitely had an idea of what I wanted to touch on lyrically. A lot of that was stuff I deliberately avoided for 21 years. It was actually when I was on stage with Not Your Kind Of People that I remember thinking ‘Why have you never gone to these specific corners of your mind?’ Two reasons: one, I wasn’t skilled enough as a writer. When I joined the band I had never written a song in my life. And two, I was too chicken.”
“What changed?” asked Allie Mac Kay.
“I grew some balls. They’re big and they swing!” laughed Manson.
“I’ve been talking about how this record is a romantic record and what I mean by that is just it’s very raw and vulnerable I suppose. It’s really kind of in your face and I suppose that’s what I mean by romantic because when you’re in love, that’s when you’re at your most open and your most raw and flawed. I guess that’s what I mean by that,” added Manson.
“A lot of this record was drawn upon what we were listening to when we were growing up, and there’s so much great music that we all love,” said Marker.
