‘Straight Outta Compton’ Smashes Weekend Box Office With $56M

By Erik Parker

The much anticipated N.W.A. biopic Straight Outta Compton snatched $56.1 million in box office booty this weekend, proving that the F. Gary Gray-directed flick had the right attitude for success.

The film showcases the rise of N.W.A, the gangsta rap supergroup of the 1980s that included Dr. DreIce Cube, MC Ren, Eazy-E and DJ Yella (Arabian Prince was also associated with the group early on).

The film had its fair share of critics who said the story glossed over N.W.A’s lyrics which addressed woman as “bitches” and “hos,” and, more specifically, an incident in which Dr. Dre had physically assaulted a female music video show host. Dr. Dre reacted to the outcry before the film even opened in an interview with Rolling Stone.

“I made some f—ing horrible mistakes in my life,” Dre said. “I was young, f—ing stupid. I would say all the allegations aren’t true – some of them are. Those are some of the things that I would like to take back. It was really f—ed up. But I paid for those mistakes, and there’s no way in hell that I will ever make another mistake like that again.”
