The 2016 Toyota Tacoma with the optional TRD off-road package is a must-have for those that are prone to getting stuck in sand. You know who you are.
There are a lot of people online talking smack about this technology saying that there’s no way it could work, or why couldn’t you just do this yourself with good brake and throttle control?
I say to those skeptical of the technology—are you able to pulse your brake peddle fast enough to simulate ABS? No, of course not. This is the same concept. But rather than decelerating, the Crawl Control maintains extremely small amounts acceleration in measured pulses to allow sand to build up under the tires.
Me and a few friends spent three hours late one evening stuck in a shallow bowl in Glamis a few years ago. That’s what we get for trying to following a couple quads with paddle tires back from Oldsmobile. And, the fact that we were in a 4-wheel drive F-150 didn’t help. Fortunately, a side-by-side came along and freed us. It only cost us two Bud Lites.
I’m going to keep on eye on this technology. Can’t wait ’til the blue oval and bowtie hijack it from Toyota.
