Next year, Batman rogue’s gallery member Harley Quinn will be seen in a live action super hero film for the first time. Margot Robbie will play the role in the upcoming super-villian-filled film, Suicide Squad.
But, per a recent Hollywood Reporter story, that role was almost played by none other than Courtney Love in a proposed sequel to Joel Schumacher’s 1997 Batman & Robin follow-up, which was to have been titled Batman Unchained. That film would have featured several of the villains from the past Schumacher and Tim Burton Batman films, including Danny DeVito as the Penguin, Michelle Pfeiffer as Catwoman, Tommy Lee Jones as Two-Face, Jim Carrey as the Riddler and Jack Nicholson’s Joker.
Harley Quinn was to be introduced in the Batman Unchained, as was Scarecrow, who was supposed to be played by Nicolas Cage. Let’s all breath a sigh of relief that this movie didn’t happen. However, with Batman and Robin, which starred George Clooney in the lead role, the Bat-franchise officially jumped the shark (the nipples on the costumes will never be unseen) and it wasn’t until Christopher Nolan’s classic 2005 Batman Begins that the series was respectably rebooted.
