All That Remains’ Philip Labonte: ‘I Don’t Like When The Government Mandates Things. But I Also Like Science!’

By Brian Ives

Philip Labonte of metal band All That Remains is a die-hard Patriots fan. So, it’s surprising to hear him marveling over Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Chris Matthews, two days after the Pats’ Super Bowl victory.

In fact, during the game, even when it looked like Seattle was going to beat his beloved team, he was still giving Matthews props on Twitter.

And ditto after the game.

But in a Radio.com interview Tuesday morning promoting the band’s upcoming album The Order of Things, he was still discussing Matthews’ story with amazement.

“He worked at Foot Locker two years ago, it’s not like he was drafted out of college!” he says. “He tries out, he makes it, and then in the biggest game, he owns it, making killer plays. I’m a Patriots fan, but I’m a football fan: I’m not so in love with the Patriots that I can’t acknowledge other teams doing good things.”

And that objectivity is why the outspoken Libertarian is so hard to pin down, politically. Radio.com will have the entire interview (with video excerpts) next week. One hot topic touched on during the interview is one of the most divisive in the country at the moment: vaccination.

In fact, his feelings on the matter caused Labonte to take issue with Rand Paul (whom he normally supports); when Paul said that vaccinations should be “voluntary,” Labonte tweeted, “This isn’t a deal-breaking issue for me, but still, f–k. C’mon Rand.”

He spoke with us about that point: “I like Rand Paul’s perspective: I don’t like when the government mandates things. But I also like science!”
