Landon Donovan Talks Upcoming LA Galaxy Vs. Manchester United Match

Earlier this morning Galaxy/US Soccer star Landon Donovan was supposed to call The Kevin & Bean Show, but ran into a little trouble and was forced to call in a few hours after his scheduled time. Why the delay? He dropped his phone in a toilet…

“We’re flying back from Kansas City the other night. We play this game on our phones through bluetooth with all the guys on the team called Super Stickman Golf. I really had to go to the bathroom but we’re in the middle of this game and it’s a race each hole to try to finish first so I’m standing in the bathroom, it’s after the game, I’m a little tired and it’s a long flight, so I’m standing there and the next thing I knew phone slips out of my hand, against the side of the wall and into the toilet. They have those little flaps on the airplane toilets… it hit that flap, it was heavy, and I started to reach down and it popped right through the bottom.”

Aside from the phone problems, Donovan and his LA Galaxy teammates are set to take on international powerhouse Manchester United this Wednesday night at the Rose Bowl.

Do you get pumped up for a game like the one on Wednesday against Manchester United?

“Yea definitely. As you get older and play more of these games, the shine comes off a little bit each time so when you play in front of probably 60,000 plus people in the Rose Bowl against a team like Manchester United there’s still… you’re human and you still get excited… and for our younger guys it’s super exciting. You never know if you’re going to get a chance like that again so I think everyone enjoys it.”

Is there a mystique that comes with Manchester United?

“They’re kind of like the Yankees would be in baseball, how they have not only a tradition but expectation of winning. Every player that goes there, especially English or British players, fully understand their responsility that they hold. EVen in these preseason games where you would think maybe they take it easy because it’s preseason… they’ve got a new coach, so everyone’s trying to impress the new coach. They’ve got a number of new players on the side that are looking to impress so I think it’s going to be a really good game on Wednesday.”
