Tim Burton’s ‘Batman’ Turns 25 Years Old

By Caitlyn Trudnich

With superhero films dominating the box-office these days, it’s hard to imagine a time when comic book characters rarely made film appearances.  But in 1989, creative genius Tim Burton teamed with Warner Bros. to bring the DC Comic’s mysterious, crime fighting vigilante to life!

Yes, people of Gotham, yesterday marked the 25th anniversary of the release of Tim Burton’s major motion picture, Batman!

The film, starring Michael Keaton as Bruce Wayne/Batman, set major blockbuster records, grossing over $400 million worldwide, and was the first film to earn $100 million in its first ten days of release – which currently ranks 66th on the top grossing  films in North America!

Batman also included an incredible cast, including Jack Nicholson in one of the most memorable roles of his impressive career as The Joker, and the gorgeous Kim Basigner, who portrayed heroine and ambitious reporter, Vicki Vale.  Also playing an important role was actor Michael Gough, who was Bruce Wayne’s loyal butler and confidant, Alfred Pennyworth.

Previously, the character of Batman had been brought to television in the campy and fun 1960’s series, starring Adam West, which later resulted in a 1966 film.  However, Warner Bros. was excited to re-envision the character, and create a new archetype for Batman fans to enjoy.

The film also features a wonderfully eerie, yet triumphant original soundtrack by long-time Burton collaborator and amazing composer, Danny Elfman.

The film was followed by three more releases from Warner Bros., Batman Returns (1992), Batman Forever (1995), and Batman & Robin (1997).   In 2005, director Christopher Nolan rebooted the Batman film franchise with Batman Begins (2005), The Dark Knight (2008), and The Dark Knight Rises (2012).  Most recently, Warner Bros. announced the upcoming 2016 release of the major motion picture,  Batman Vs. Superman: Dawn Of Justice, starring Ben Affleck as Batman.

Now, the film that started in all continues to be a favorite for Batman and Tim Burton fans, both young and old!  Warner Bros. Studios is currently holding The Batman Exhibit, in celebration of 75 years of the DC Comic’s character.  Included in the exhibit are all of the famous Batmobiles, costumes, and props from the many films.

Also, Danny Elfman will be returning to Los Angeles this fall to perform music from his many collaborations in film and music with Tim Burton – including his music from Batman and Batman Returns! For more information, click HERE.
