From taking your requests to putting together the Furious 5 @ 9, Nicole Alvarez stays pretty busy while she’s in the studio. But as occupied as she may be, you can bet Nicole constantly has one thing on her mind, her brother Eddy.

As many know, having a sibling is pretty awesome. You grow up together, play together, and watch each other become adults. If you’re lucky, you’ll have a sibling that inspires you. And if you’re really, really lucky, you’ll have a sibling that inspires a nation.

Nicole Alvarez is one incredibly lucky sister. Her brother Eddy will be competing in the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, representing the U.S. in Short Track Speed Skating.

But the reason Eddy is so inspiring is more than just the fact that he is an Olympian. It’s the journey that Eddy took, through injury and heartache, that makes his story so powerful.

Eddy’s career started when he was 5 years old and received a pair of plastic skates for Christmas. It was clear from the get go that there was something special about Eddy’s ability. “As soon as he put them on, he immediately knew what to do and started skating circles around all the older kids and extreme sports buffs and punks around,” remembers Nicole. “He was a mini-phenom.” He soon made the seamless transition to ice where his love for speed skating developed.

In high school, Eddy “retired” from speed skating to take up baseball, where he became an accomplished player. But he couldn’t resist the lure of speed skating, and soon returned to the ice.

The accolades—and the championships—soon followed:

  • Gold medal in the 5000m Relay at World Cup #4 in Solomna, Russia
  • Silver medal in the 5000m Relay at World Cup #2 in Seoul, South Korea
  • Bronze medal in the 500m at World Cup #1 in Shanghai, China
  • Best U.S. time at the Samsung ISU Short Track World Cup (500 m)
  • U.S. Championships 4th place

Eddy had all the makings of an Olympian, but you wouldn’t know it if you had seen him just two short years ago. On March 7, 2012, Eddy underwent Bilateral Debridement Patella Repair to due to the serious tearing of the patellar tendons in both knees.

It took a lot of hard work, but Eddy was able to make a full recovery. In fact, less than 6 months later, he placed 7th in the U.S. team trials. In December of last year, he placed 3rd in the U.S. Championships, setting the stage for his Olympic dreams. Earlier this month, he placed 2nd overall in the U.S. Olympic Speed Skating Trials in Salt Lake City, Utah, which meant he was going to Sochi.

What many people don’t know, however, is that even though was born and raised in Miami as a proud second generation Cuban, Eddy trained right here in SoCal at Sand Dune Park in Manhattan Beach, The Glacial Gardens Skating Arena in Lakewood, and Kenneth Hahn State recreation Area in Baldwin Hills.

Nicole and everyone here at KROQ are proud of what Eddy has accomplished. It’s not often you can say you know an Olympian. You can bet when you hear Nicole on KROQ tonight, her brother Eddy will be on her mind.

Best of luck in Sochi, Eddy!
