Thomas Lennon and Robert Ben Garant have been visiting the Kevin & Bean Show for “various BS projects” since the 90s, and as Kevin joked, “we’re fans of about 50% of what you’ve done.”
“We’ve been cranking out half-thought out crap for a quarter-century.” Lennon said. Mostly known for their show “Reno 911!” , the guys also have made a living writing films, including the “Night At The Museum” movies and yes, “Herbie Fully Loaded”.
Their new comedy “Hell Baby”, written by, directed by, and starring the duo, was born from the desire for someone to throw money at them and then leave them the hell alone.
“Reno 911, we ran into the ground, like we do.” Garant explained.
“Instead of doing more TV with weird nudity and chasing each other around, why don’t we do a movie of that?” Lennon finished.
The boys we given a modest budget of $1.9 million, given no notes, and sent off to New Orleans to film.
“You can tell when you see the film, “Wow, no one gave them any notes”, Lennon said, “three different times we stop to eat sandwiches in the film.”
Filming in New Orleans was interesting. After the table read, Rob Huebel took off his shirt and “bro danced” with some guys, later having no recollection of the incident. The guys also stayed only a mile away from set, so they would bike to work every morning.
“The last week of work, I had to call 911 twice, I saw two assaults,” Garant recalls, “Maybe it’s time to go home.”
Lennon and Garant were also fascinated with the alcohol laws in the city. “You can go through a drive-thru and get a daquiri in your car,” Lennon explained, and Garant continued, “Until they put the straw in, its not considered an open container!”
“Hell Baby” stars Rob Corddry, Leslie Bibb, Michael Ian Black, Kumail Nanjiani, and Keegan Michael Key, who absolutely steals the show.
“[Listeners] tune into this nonsense,” Kevin said,” so they’ll love your nonsense.”
