Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg + Nick Frost Talk Ice Cream and Injuries For “The World’s End”

“The World’s End” opens this Friday, and when Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost visited the morning show, Bean remarked that he never had seen anyone do more press for one movie.

“When I left England to do the press tour my son was 2,” Pegg joked, “he’s 10 now.”

Edgar Wright explained,”It’s our movie and we wrote it, it’s very personal. It’s our baby, so we want to do as much press as we can.”

“The World’s End” is the third of the “loose trilogy” including “Shaun of The Dead” and “Hot Fuzz”. Though they aren’t directly connected, the three movies share similar themes of loss of identity, friendship and perpetual adolescence.  And ice cream… which is why the trilogy is also known as “The Cornetto Trilogy”.

In “Shaun Of The Dead”, the Cornetto (similar to a Drumstick) was written into the movie as the character Ed’s preferred hangover cure. As a result, Cornetto supplied free ice cream at the premiere.

“It was the best day of my life,” Pegg said, “there wasn’t free ice cream at my wedding.”

Thinking they had a good thing going, the dessert was written into “Hot Fuzz,” but the freebies did not continue.  With the first two movies carrying the Cornetto theme, they felt they couldn’t give up, and included the tie-in through to “The World’s End”, and again, they got free ice cream.

The cast did a lot of their own stunts for the movie, which meant a lot of training, learning choreography, and injuries.

Nick Frost bruised his liver during filming a fight with an 18-year old. Thinking the actor wouldn’t do much damage with a kick to the stomach, Frost refused protective padding. After 5 or 6 hard kicks to the Solar Plexus, it was far too late to change his mind and request the padding.

Simon Pegg broke his finger while jumping over a bar, and wouldn’t tell Edgar Wright.

“I noticed he went white and asked if he was OK to do another take,” Wright recalls,” and he just said “Yeah, yeah, yeah!”

Pegg sums it up, “It goes to show you how dangerous pub crawling is.”
