It’s a tradition as old as the Johnny Carson show: Most nights, since 1966, bands big and small play on the national stage of late night television. Sometimes good things happen, sometimes bad things happen, but the performances are always worth watching. They’re captivating mostly because they offer the raw sound of a live band and the professional video and audio recording of a late night television show.

This week, August 12-16, sees the return of lots of artists we’ve seen a few times already this summer: the National, Edward Sharpe, Selena Gomez, Pokey LaFarge, Snoop Lion, Luke Bryan, Kacey Musgraves, Paramore—the list goes on and on. There’s even a whole week of Justin Timberlake repeats. But in a sea of repear appearances, a few lesser-known (but very talented) artists like’s recent New Music To Know pick Hanni El Khatib, Hiatus Kaiyote and Kimbra get a chance to stand out.

Hiatus Kaiyote is Australia’s band-sized answer to the jazzy R&B of British songstresses like Joss Stone and Amy Winehouse. With light, new-wavey keys more suited to a lounge than the club, Hiatus Kaiyote bring something new to American airwaves, and it’s beautifully appropriate for the late night time slot.
