“We started making music when we were in high school, which I’m proud to say was in the mid-‘90s,” laughed Tegan of Tegan and Sara during an exclusive pre-performance interview with KROQ DJ Stryker. “I feel like our average fan right now was born when we graduated in 1998, but we drink vampire blood so we’re still at it and still feeling very fresh-faced and excited to be making records in 2013.”
Furthering the ‘90s theme, Stryker asked which bands the twin Canadian sisters reeled off some of their teenage favorites.
“The big ones for us in the ‘90s, like, Smashing Pumpkins, Nirvana, Hole, Bikini Kill, I mean everything,” Sara explained. “We were like rabid, rabid music fans. But we also loved what our parents and grandparents listened to, too. I loved Patsy Cline. One of our first real concerts was Bruce Springsteen when we were like 10. We listened to everything.”
The sisters also discussed some of the other marquee acts they’ve toured with over the years, and how great they all were to work with.
“All of the bands we’ve toured with have been so wonderful,” Tegan enthused. “Some make more sense to hang out with, like we toured with Paramore, for example, and they became friends. We’re sort of similar ages and that kind of thing. But we’ve also toured with people like the Killers, the Black Keys, we learned so much from touring with Neil Young. We weren’t like chilling with Neil Young, it was almost like going to school. We were just being educated every day. With other bands, it’s more like we’re friends.”
After performing at the second weekend of the Coachella festival, the band is set to embark on an extensive tour down under in Australia, followed by shows in the UK before returning to America for another round of U.S dates starting in Chicago when they play the Lollapalooza 2013 festival on August 4.
