Taco Bell translates fun's hit song to Spanish, Mercedes-Benz has sympathy for the devil and Volkswagen gets happy with Jimmy Cliff.

A 30-second commercial during Super Bowl XLVII ran advertisers in the neighborhood of $4,000,000 reported CNN Money in January. Of the dozens of new spots that aired yesterday, there are a few  worth highlighting based on their musical merits.

Taco Bell “Viva Young” – Set to fun.‘s hit “We Are Young,” awkwardly translated into Spanish via Google Translate, the restaurant chain’s latest Superbowl ad follows an 87-year-old Bernie Goldblatt and his band of partying senior citizens on a late night journey of debauchery. Did someone at Deutsch L.A., Taco Bell’s ad agency, watch Modestep’s music video for “Sunlight” before pitching this to Taco Bell? The similarity is uncanny.


Mercedes-Benz “Soul” – Sure the German auto giant’s latest ad for the soon-to-be-released CLA features Willem Dafoe and model Kate Upton, but the real star of the commercial is the Rolling Stones classic “Sympathy for the Devil.”


Hyundai “Epic Playdate” – In the Korean auto manufacturer’s latest big-budget ad, the brand teamed with way-out-there alt-rock artists, The Flaming Lips. To promote the new seven-passenger Santa Fe, the band created a new song titled “Sun Blows Up Today” which will also be featured as a bonus track on the band’s upcoming album, The Terror, hitting stores in April.


Wonderful Pistachios has a history of tapping into pop culture for its ads; Snoop Dogg, The Simpsons, The Village People, Manny Pacquiao, the internet sensation – honey badger, the Harlem Globetrotters and the latest addition to the list; Korean pop star, Psy with a twist on his hit called “Crackin’ Gangnam Style.”


Budweiser “Brotherhood” – Fleetwood Mac’s classic “Landslide” sets the tone to the latest of many Budweiser spots featuring tales of the company’s majestic Clydesdales. Stevie Nicks’ lyrics aid in pulling heartstrings as a farm hand raises, and eventually gives up his best friend to become part of the Budweiser team. The two are reunited after the farmhand goes to the big city to get a glimpse of his friend in a parade.


Volkswagen “Get Happy” – It’s likely that few people expected the 1970 The Partridge Family theme song to make a comeback in 2013, but Volkswagen used a version sung by reggae legend Jimmy Cliff’s in several “Get In. Get Happy”-themed commercials airing throughout the Super Bowl.


Hyundai “Team” – Set to Quiet Riot’s 1983 head-banging classic, “Metal Health,” Hyundai shows off the new Santa Fe’s seating capacity. Upon attempting to join a friendly game of peewee football with some neighborhood kids, a boy is told to come back when he has his own team. With the help of his mom, he sets out on a journey to round up a team of the toughest kids he can find.


Doritos “Goat 4 Sale” – Amateur director and winner of Doritos “Crash The Superbowl” campaign, Ben Callner, got the idea for the ad when his friend said “Hey, my goat eating and crunching on food is really funny.” The star of the ad is Moose, the Doritos-obsessed goat. A man man buys a goat thinking it will make a good pet. He proceeds to feed it his favorite treat, Doritos. After the goat’s crunching noise get the best of him, the man decides to sell the goat only to find that Moose has no intention of leaving. To keep the spot moving, Callner employed a John Lee Hooker -inspired soundtrack.
