Despite lead singer Morrissey’s famous quote that “I would eat my own testicles than reform the Smiths, and that’s saying something for a vegetarian,” rumors are swirling that ‘80s alt-rock legends the Smiths will indeed get back together for a handful of reunion dates in 2013.
According to the website Holy Moly, “several credible sources” are claiming that the Smiths have already confirmed the reunion, and that 2013 live dates have been booked, including a headlining slot at next year’s Glastonbury festival in England.
The sources aren’t able to confirm if the alleged reunion would include all four original members of the band, with some speculating that bad blood with drummer Mike Joyce (who successfully sued Morrissey and Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr for approximately £ 1 million in 2007) would keep him from taking part in what would be historical performances.
No one has worked harder to reunite the Smiths than Paul Tollett of concert promotion firm Goldenvoice, which produces the annual Coachella festival. In a recent interview with Australia’s Herald Sun, Morrissey explained the extremes Coachella was willing to enforce to land a lucrative Smiths reunion, including barring any meat from the festival.
“Interestingly the agents for Coachella offered a 100-per-cent vegetarian event for the following year if I would agree to headline with Johnny Marr as the Smiths,” Morrissey explained, referencing his 2009 solo Coachella set where he complained onstage about the smell of cooking meat in the air. “Fascinatingly they made it clear that they would ‘not require’ the Smiths’ bass player or drummer … which I thought certainly said something.”
Morrissey most recently made news in American when he rushed to the aid of an older woman who collapsed in New York’s Strand bookstore.
