From the moment they released their 1995 debut, Adrenaline, Sacramento band the Deftones has carved a singular and idiosyncratic sound that blurs the line between American hardcore and the more intelligent side of heavy metal (think bands like ISIS and Pelican). Incorporating a wide variety of influences into their music, frontman Chino Moreno and the crew are akin to the cool kids at their own lunch table in the world of hard rock (not many bands of their ilk can lay claim to covering artists as disparate as Sade and Depeche Mode).
Despite enduring setbacks that would have ended many a lesser band (Deftones bassist Chi Cheng suffered a catastrophic car crash in 2008 that still has him in a minimally conscious state), they’ve had the will and determination to continue making music for their legion of rabid fans.
In anticipation of the Deftones’ seventh full-length album, Koi No Yokan (scheduled for release on November 13), the band has unleashed new song “Leathers” as a free download below from the band’s official website, Deftones.com. On the site, the band also reveals the track listing for Koi No Yokan. The free download is only for a limited time, so don’t wait around like it’s just always going to be there. Chop chop!
Deftones fans in the SoCal area will want to plan on attending Epicenter 2012 this Saturday, September 22, at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheater in Irvine, CA. Deftones will appear alongside bands like Stone Temple Pilots, Bush, Scars On Broadway and Hollywood Undead at the day-long music festival.
