M83’s Anthony Gonzalez wowed fans with his sonically gorgeous spectacle at Coachella Valley Arts and Music Festival last month including pop star Katy Perry to whom he extended an offer to work on her next album.

While Gonzalez told KROQ/Los Angeles that he “grew up with posters of Iron Maiden” on his walls and that his family was a huge influence on his album, the French singer-songwriter told the Chicago Tribune that his extended two-disc triumph was inspired by the Smashing Pumpkins’ Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness.

“That album hit me when I was 14, 15, and I was discovering all this new music,” said Gonzalez to the Tribune. “It was just so deep and rich, I got lost in it every time,” he said of the Grammy-winning 1995 double album. “I know what people say about it; some people criticize Billy Corgan for putting himself out there like that. Like, who is he to make a double album? But I loved it.”

“I love old-fashioned albums made in a proper recording studio with real musicians,” he continued. “I was craving something really produced and very ambitious, something big.”

Chicago-native, Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan, has come up a lot in music news recently. The band is releasing their 7th album, Oceania, on June 18.

Another chart-topping band fun. with the hit single “We Are Young,”  said in an interview with KROQ/Los Angeles that one of their favorite albums growing up was also Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness.

“When I was a freshman in high school, Smashing Pumpkins’ Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness had been out for a year or two, but there was one song I put on repeat all winter. I was longing for this girl and I’d listen to it over and over again, and be like, that’s it,” said frontman Nate Ruess.

“I was so inspired by that feeling, and feeling if I can make music and someone else has that winter song to lament someone about, yeah, this is a cool job, I want to do that.”
