2012 is shaping up to be a huge year for The Shins. Frontman James Mercer has an all-new backing band for Port of Morrow, Mercer’s first new music under his band’s moniker in five years. And The Shins are high up on the Coachella bill — playing both Saturdays of the sold-out mega-festival.

Hopefully you’ve already heard the power-pop jangle of lead single “Simple Song” — now get ready for the B-side, “September”. The single is out Feb. 14, but The Shins dropped an amazing lyric/artwork video to accompany the old-school love song/classic rock vibe, along with a sort-of album trailer. Right on the heels of the release of Port of Morrow (out March 20 via Columbia/Aural Apothecary), The Shins will embark on a European tour, then head stateside to what looks like a nationwide, college-town trek — including Coachella of course. Check out the amazing lyric video for “September” and the behind-the-scenes footage set to “September Song” below:

Going to go out on a limb and conclude that Mercer is not fond of contemporary recording methods. You can buy Port of Morrow on freakin’ reel-to-reel tape, as prominetly displayed in both videos:
