OC Music Awards 2012: Railroad To Alaska Embrace The Darkness With Grunge Art-Metal

Suitor agreed, continuing, “Whether we show it, outwardly in our reactions or not: we’re all coming from that place. And when the guitars go deeper, it’s a straight shot to a nastier sound and it starts to speak to us.”

“When he started using the double-bass,” said Suitor pointing to Morales, “the visceral quality of that speaks to us and we wrote tons of songs right when he adopted that.

All these tools that are becoming more and more apparent to us will inevitably put us in a genre where people will decide whether we’re serious or not. But inside of it right now, I don’t think any of us have any doubt about what we’re doing.”

It has to be from the darkness within us. It has to be,” continued Suitor passionately. “We were just given the tools at the right time in our lives to do it together.”

“Cerebral and tarnished is probably the simplest and most concise way to put it. We’re thinking more. We’re more aware. We’re more experienced, but at the same time, we’re starting to lose it and be more careless and it’s a direct contradiction.”

Music is the last place that the government and the conspiracy bodies can really tamper with. They have to just assassinate a musician when he comes too present and powerful.
Honestly, whether people will take Railroad to Alaska seriously is no question.

Railroad to Alaska is so hyper-intellectual, as both musicians and people, and so intently artistic that it would be almost impossible to doubt their “tenacity” as musicians. Or, even as conscientious, aware human beings.

When asked about what they thought about the end of the world or whether people were attracted to their sound during this almost-morbid, conspiracy-laden period in society, Suitor replied, “We’ve got songs that we’ve been writing, this is going to sound as pretentious as f*ck, but they are outlets for that end of the world feeling.”

“That kind of dire sensation, maybe that’s our niche, and maybe that’s why people listen to dark sh*t and listen to metal.

“Music is the last place that the government and the conspiracy bodies can really tamper with. They have to just assassinate a musician when he comes too present and powerful.”

“These things are apparent,” said Suitor. “Like the economy, it’s downgrading. The state of war and terror, it’s climbing up. Things aren’t getting any better; they’re just getting worse. Even if you’re rich, you’re aware of that. Even if you’re poor, you’re aware of that. It’s inevitable.”

It's about arrangement. It's about temperament, tenacity. I mean, those are words that you can use to describe it. We're f**king tenacious when we play. We are. We're f**king crazy. Someone will get hurt maybe.
Although Williams’ friend dubbed the band, “art metal,” this feeling of social disintegration and “dire” global consequences might be one reason why, beyond their “tarnished” sound, Railroad to Alaska identifies with the grunge movement so readily.

“I think grunge is an important word for us to use because I think grunge did something that a lot of other scenes in hard rock never did,” postulated Suitor.Nevermind sold a bajillion copies and it’s a timeless album. We’re more geared to Alice in Chains and Nirvana than any metal band around.”

“It’s about arrangement. It’s about temperament, tenacity. I mean, those are words that you can use to describe it. We’re f**king tenacious when we play. We are. We’re f**king crazy. Someone will get hurt maybe.”

“I’ll look at you and you’ll get this feeling that I may just f**king kill you,” concluded Suitor. “Like, I might. Really. But not for any good reason, but because I just can’t help myself.

“But I’m not a serial killer because we’re sitting here having a nice conversation. And that becomes scary.”
