Thanks to end of year conspiracy theorists, Mayan calender believers, and fantastical folklore, 2012 is a year wrought with questions about the “end of times.” There is no other band out there that better tackles these motifs than the experimental alternative rock super group of Angels & Airwaves who played a stellar show at Red Bull Sound Space at KROQ.

Comprised of Blink-182 guitarist and vocalist Tom DeLonge, the band also boasts guitarist David Kennedy, bassist Matt Wachter, and new drummer Ilan Rubin.

Angels & Airwaves has put out four albums since 2006–most notably their 2011 album Love: Part Two (2011) which was part of a film or “multimedia project” that the band scored and produced called Love.

“The show was awesome last night…It was amazing. Magical for us,” said DeLonge before Angels & Airwaves answered some questions posed to them by Stryker and a few people in the audience.

Wachter said that the movie “took up the majority of our time” and “was five years in the making.” He was also making “babies.”

Both literally and for practice.

In between “making babies,” somehow the band managed to write music. DeLonge explained the process, “Every band finds that unique route in the studio…We’ve kind of mixed the demo writing process with the recording process all in kind of one way.”

“The magic of Blink is how different we are from each other,” DeLonge continued, “In this band, I think our magic is that we’re all kind of shooting for the same goal…But it’s always fun. It’s like a club house.”

Apparently a clubhouse where the singer makes “doodles of naked superheroes.”

Before playing their set, led by Angels & Airwaves’ song “The Adventure,” DeLonge told an audience member that “it’s special” every time he gets to play the song. After “The Adventure,” Angels & Airwaves played “Anxiety,” “Everything’s Magic,” “Hallucinations,” and fan favorite, “Surrender.”

And what does DeLonge think about the end of the world? That’s a question he will gladly answer.

“Finally, a good question,” DeLonge concluded. “My opinion is that the workings of our solar system is like that of a finally tuned Swiss clock…Gravitational pulls will awaken our inner soul-beings.”

I can’t get over how annoying Tom’s voice is live.. he ALWAYS sounds like a drunk guy on karaoke night. I will never attend an AVA show until he starts annunciating his lyrics correctly.
