Gotye’s Video Will Draw You In

Gotye‘s third album, Making Mirrors, released last year, features his newest single, “Somebody That I Used to Know.” The video for this song employs painting, body art and animation that you’ll want to watch until the very end.

And they say that imitation is the best flattery — this cover of the song is one of the highest viewed videos on YouTube:

Gotye GalleryThe art portrayed in Gotye’s video is only one small spark of the immense creative ideas that Gotye puts into his recordings. A talented drummer, his instruments may include a vintage organ from a second hand shop, or something called a Winton Musical Fence made up of five metal strings attached to wooden fence posts. Many sounds he uses are sampled from old vinyl albums from the 1950s and 1960s.

His second album, Like Drawing Blood, (2006) had great success in Australia and became a cult hit in Britain, but here in the U.S., Drew Barrymore contributed to his success when she fell in love with the song “Learnalilgivinanlovin” and put it in her movies, Whip It and Going the Distance.

Wouter “Wally” De Backer, (his real name,) was born in Belgium and raised in Australia. He also plays with The Basics, a Melbourne indie-pop band.
