5 Bands I Wish Would Reunite: In Honor Of Van Halen’s Upcoming Grammy Concert

A few days back, the rock world got itself in a frenzy over an unconfirmed tweet that Van Halen is scheduled to perform at this year’s Grammy Nominations Concert. The concert, which is scheduled for November 30th, will feature the controversial rock band’s most recent lineup consisting of Eddie Van Halen, David Lee Roth, Alex Van Halen, and Eddie’s 20-year-old son Wolfgang on bass.
Although the tweet from the official Grammy twitter feed doesn’t explicitly state Van Halen will be “reuniting,” it’s clear what it entails: “Who do u predict the reuniting band will be @ #GRAMMYnoms? Does this hint make u wanna ‘Jump’ & ‘Dance the Night Away’?”
Barring the possibility that we’re all idiots, which in my case is very possible, I think it’s a safe bet Van Halen will be rocking the Nokia Live Theater in downtown Los Angeles at the end of this month. With that in mind, I ask what bands you would like to see make amends and get back together? This may more difficult than you think considering Stone Temple Pilots, Blink-182, The Smashing Pumpkins and Soundgarden all have reunited within the past couple of years.
The White Stripes
Although Jack White’s musical genius lives on in The Raconteurs and The Dead Weather, most fans would agree it doesn’t equate with his firstborn in The White Stripes.
Every album the co-gender duo of Meg and Jack White made (in my opinion) was solid. The music characterized what rock is meant to be: dirty, loud, and sometimes uncomfortable. The White Stripes delivered a nostalgic voice, while maintaining a sense of novelty. They made simple chords into behemoth-sized rock anthems. Watched a USC football game or soccer match lately? “Seven Nation Army” has officially replaced the outdated “Eye of the Tiger” and “We Will Rock You” for songs that pump you up.
Call it hopeless optimism, but I’m not fully convinced we’ve heard the last from The White Stripes.

LCD Soundsystem
LCD Soundsystem released only three albums before head master James Murphy announced the band’s discontinuation in 2010.
Murphy’s wit and uncanny ability to transport listeners back to the 80′s was his specialty. A la Trent Reznor, Murphy was the mastermind behind the band, and a savant in musical production. For fans like myself the timing was totally unexpected, like coming home from an exhilarating romantic getaway only to get dumped. A fair comparison considering several of LCD Soundsystem’s songs match the length of our more short-lived relationships. At least Murphy exited on a high note with This Is Happening, and a 4-hour farewell show at Madison Square Garden featuring special guests Arcade Fire.

Tee-Hee Tee-Hee *smiles giddily* How funny that I was there for every band you named in the third paragraphs reunion gigs which at the certain concert nights I went to were some of the greatest out of the tours. Like Stone Temple Pilots at the San Diego Chargers practice field July 27th, 2008 (MY BIRTHDAY!!!) was the best time to have seen Weiland live! The crowd was cool and the GA was perfect cause I was able to bop my way 5th row center and Scott Weiland threw his megaphone right at me but I reluctantly reached out for it cause I didn’t want to get caught up in a dogpile, that, and this dumb selfish broad and her boyfriend knocked me out of the way for it, but they got jumped by ten reandom guys so the irony was a good alternative. Saw Blink 182 play Irvine’s Verizon Wireless Amp. in 2009 with decent Right side Orch tickets which I ended hopping my way to first row right center where I fully relived my teen youth as I sang along every damn Blink song. Such a great gig! Although Tom and Mark’s chemistry on stage during that show made me kinda not at ease. Things looked a little uncomfortable but was still a sick show. The only one I haven’t seen out of the list is The Billy Corgan band, uh- I mean, The Smashing Pumpkins…only cause I’ve been broke and wasn’t kicked info at the time of his Viper Room gig. That’s really the only way I would want to see Corgan, right upfront in a tiny little venue where I can shower him with praise like he loves. The gods however wouldn’t allow me to miss the one and only SOUNDGARDEN!!! Ah man…was that an epic show that I will never forget! I was so high that I lost my mind during the first quarter of the set thinking I was being hunted by undercover security, then I bopped my way from 19th row to 7th row of GA and slammed into the moshpit for “Rusty Cage” and ended up 4th row center where I lost my left lens to my corrective lens’ during “Black Hole Sun” and finished the night singing passionately exhausted out of my mind and still majorly faded to my ultimate favorite song “4th of July” while still concerned about whether I’d be able to find my lens which I did miraculously! Dude…that was the stellar gig and most awesome performance I’ve ever seen! Atleast until my brother once again reminded me that in comparrison to Van Halen at the Honda Center July of 2007 and I quote, “Soundgarden was loud, but Nothing can ever be as loud as Van Halen…” I have to agree, Seeing Eddie shredding was a monumentus event that lives on as one of my greatest concerts ever! Re-living signature tracks that i honestly wasn’t even born for and other tracks I was literally a baby for and even more so others I was only in kindergarden for was in itself just so incredible. That and the fact that my brother had gotten me into Van Halen as a tike and mentored me in the ways of 1984, Fair Warning, Van Halen II, Women and Children First, Diver Down, and ofcourse…the absolute essential VAN HALEN self-titled. I grew up on the best and celebrated immensely as my brother and I rocked “…the night away”. Yeah, man, I’ve been so grateful to have experienced some of rocks greatest artists and yet I do indeed regret the ones I’ve yet to see…like The White Stripes…Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, A Perfect Circle, and so many others…But! To live with regret every day is to not live at all and believe me brother I like to live so on that note great post Derek Waltz! Van Halen will be a sweet surprise for the Grammy’s and Nokia! If my brother and I have money that’d be an even sweeter surprise to experience it all again. I love posts where I can reminisce of the days long past…only in our memories can we live once again… KROQ RULES!!!

I have one major issue with this list. All the bands you have listed have broken up over the past two years. Hell, last time I checked, NIN was not broken up, just retired from the road and ummmmmmmm didn’t Rage Against The Machine just play a major show in Los Angeles less than six months ago?
I wish you would have listed artists who have been away for a while. How about the Talking Heads, The Smiths, Catherine Wheel or The Refused? You know, bands who have actually been a way for a while.

Reverend, this list reflects my personal taste in music. Not the stations. We all love music here, so I’m not sure what the goal is in “wishing” I would have listed older artists. NIN is on hiatus, so yes, maybe that pick reflects my bias for TR. In regards to Rage, they haven’t produced new material in over 10 years.

I grasp that it’s a personal list, but you have listed bands that are not technically broken up. Nine Inch Nails is still making music (see the U2 Achtung Baby tribute that’s about to drop). Rage said it may be their last show, but we know it won’t be. I get that it is your list, I just wish you had listed artists that broke Obama took office.

I vote for reunions only when all the members of the band are alive, no more replacements of leads singers … (e.g. Queen and Sublime).

Honestly the reuniting of the original Guns N Roses line up would be the best band to bring back. They would explode on the stage since its been almost 20 years with their original line up and im talkin appetite line up!! Its the best band because its be so long and all the members still live!! It would be a beautiful site, i doubt the world would even be able to handle such an event!

I agree with what was said about Oasis and especially Liam.
My wish list
The Smiths
Stone Roses (yeah I know it’s already happening)
Oasis (with Liam publicly kissing his brothers a$$ every night on stage)
Wish they hadn’t
