Drummer Champion was rushed to the hospital early Tuesday morning with a burst appendix (ouch!).  But as they say in show business, “the show must go on!”  Therefore, Cage the Elephant continued their plans to open for the Foo Fighters during their Tuesday night show at Utah’s Maverick Center.

For the band’s first few songs, an engineer for the tour gladly assisted his drumming skills.  Then, the crowd really went wild when Dave Grohl stormed the stage to play the last five songs of their set, including, “In One Ear,” “Shake Me Down,” “Sell Yourself,” and “Ain’t No Rest for the Wicked.”  Apparently it was Dave’s idea to step in for some songs, as he called Cage’s manager to ask for “permission.”

As we previously reported, The two bands began their friendship, an eventual tour plans, at our very own Weenie Roast this year! Lead guitarist for Cage, Lincoln Parish, couldn’t have nicer things to say about fellow tourmates, the Foo Fighters, saying, “I’ve never met a group of more humble musicians.”[pullquote quote=”If you’re going to be replaced by anybody, it might as well be the best.”]

Parish describes their set, saying, “I had to pinch myself. I turned around and Dave Grohl is playing the drums. It’s an amazing, once-in-lifetime experience. Nobody can replace Jared. But… it’s Dave f**king Grohl! If you’re going to be replaced by anybody, it might as well be the best.

There is no official word who, if anyone, will be filling in on the drums for the next few tour stops (including at The Forum in LA), but the band hopes that drummer Champion will be in good health to perform on October 17th for their San Diego show.

Cage the Elephant also just released their latest music video for their song, “Aberdeen.” You can check it out on their website!
