Since 1994, the non-profit organization Sweet Relief Musicians Fund has provided invaluable aid to musicians who struggle with disabilities, illness and aging artists who’ve hit financial turmoil.
Next weekend (Oct. 14/15) Sweet Relief will debut “Live Music Night – Night of Sweet Relief,” a massive live music and charity event covering over 200 music venues across the country, including several right here in SoCal.
Hundreds of local and visiting artists will take over the LA/OC music scene for a weekend of great tunes, backing a cause true to the heart of any music aficionado. Notable bands playing at a venue near you include Locals Only alt-rockers Kiev (The House of Blues – Anaheim), [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]The Hold Steady[/lastfm] (The Satellite), and Richard Cheese & Lounge Against the Machine (The House of Blues – Sunset).
18 years ago, singer-songwriter Victoria Williams was forced to cut short her opening gig touring with [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Neil Young[/lastfm] after weakening health concerns. Williams was eventually diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, suffocating the artist with potentially unrecoverable medical expenses. Guided by the aid from fellow friends and musicians such as [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Pearl Jam[/lastfm] and [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Lou Reed[/lastfm], a tribute album titled Sweet Relief: A Benefit for Victoria Williams materialized in order to provision care for the artist. The cause eventually blossomed into the Sweet Relief Musicians Fund, which continues to build and expand upon aid for hindered artists like Williams.
Behind the support of big name ticket outlets Goldenvoice and House of Blues Entertainment, “Night of Sweet Relief” will showcase all genres of music imaginable in a live setting. No matter what you fancy, whether it’s rock, indie, pop, country, hip-hop, DJ, country, or some crazy hybrid, there’s a band that will satisfy your cravings. With every cover charge and ticket purchase, $1 will proceed to Sweet Relief.

Words on Sweet Relief:
“We feel extremely honored to be a part of Sweet Relief Musicians Fund’s ‘Night of Sweet Relief.’…. This hits home personally with us since we have dedicated practically our entire lives to the creation of music. Contributing to the well-being of the creators of this art form we cherish so much is the least we can all do. We think it’s incredible that over 300 band’s will be playing simultaneously across the U.S. for the same cause.”
What’s Your Sound?
“We describe our own efforts as forward-thinking and heavily layered. We like having lots of gear and colors to choose from. Making something really thick that you can get lost into is important…five sound guys have died working with us.”

“The people at Sweet Relief have been friends, not only to us and local musicians, but the musical community at large. They’re a great example of how music connects people and can bring out the best in them. Sweet Relief gives those of us that choose to be a musician a little more peace of mind.”
What’s Your Sound?:
“We have a gritty southern rock sound with some blues influences. We’ve been working on a new EP this past summer and are looking forward to releasing it in the very near future. We’re going to play a never-before-heard song that we’re really excited about on Saturday, and we’re particularly excited to share the stage with some really great local talent.”
“Can’t Help Myself”
What’s Your Sound?:
“Paulie Pesh is a band with more instruments than you can imagine. Swooning music in the vein of [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Andrew Bird[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Sufjan Stevens[/lastfm] and [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Arcade Fire[/lastfm], Paulie Pesh makes use of each unique element present. With a brass/woodwind section which includes tuba and flute, a string section and a moving rhythm section, Paulie Pesh has been known to cram tiny stages in both LA & OC with their abundant presence. Though they are many, none are superfluous as they produce a lush but balanced sound that captivates the ear.”
What’s Your Sound?:
“We’ve evolved a lot since our last album. We ditched the minor jazz influences for gritty desert soundscapes and let our noise-influences loose. It’s really allowed for our homemade instruments and experiments to mold the music more, and somehow made us adopt a slightly more ’60s vibe. Which is to say, we got louder.”
[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]I Hate You Just Kidding[/lastfm]
“We just released our first full-length album this summer and we’re really excited to share most of it at House of Blues in Anaheim for the first time as a full-band. We’re glad to be part of this ‘Night of Sweet Relief,’ which is going to be an amazing night of music at hundreds of venues nationwide.”
