[Showbiz Beat] Scientific Research Determines 10 Catchiest Songs Ever

There’s some songs that, regardless of how good or bad they are, will have you singing along every freakin’ time you hear them! Musicologist Dr. Alison Pawley and psychologist Dr. Daniel Mullensiefen of Goldsmiths, University of London have now released study results that have determined the ten most catchy songs.
Some of these songs are obvious choices, while a few have us scratching our heads. Keep in mind that this research was done by Brits.
Doctors Pawley and Mullensiefen monitored the behavior of thousands of subjects as they sang along to more than a thousand songs in order to reach their conclusion.
But what makes a “catchy” song? There were four main traits that were determined. While these traits might be odd, they were found to be consistent:
- The larger the breath a vocalist takes before singing a line, the likelier we are to sing along.
- The combination of longer musical phrases and a hook with more than three different pitches was found to be crucial to sing-along success.
- The presence of male singers was found to increase vocal participation.
- Researchers found that higher male voices indicates high energy and purpose, especially when combined with a smaller vocal range.
So belt out these tunes, from 10-1:
10. “Livin’ on a Prayer” – Bon Jovi
I mean, really, who doesn’t sing along to this every time it comes on in a bar?!
