[Flashback] Kevin & Bean Bald? It Happened During A 1991 Road Trip.

It was the summer of ’91.

Maria, the morning show producer had hired me as an intern to assist her with the daily duties including fetching the weather reports, clipping news stories from the paper, researching guest info etc.

My first day was on a Tuesday, somewhere in mid-June. I was told that the the station was strangely quiet because Kevin & Bean had been on what they called the “Yup There It Is Summer Vacation.” Their road trip took them from LA, through the Southern states, stopping in New Orleans and Nashville before heading to Florida and on to the Bermuda Triangle. They were accompanied by Andy, KROQ’s Program Director. Along the way, they’d stop to record segments for the morning show.

More notable than their mockery of the Bermuda Triangle was their stint in New Orleans, specifically, a bar called Tropical Isle. It was there that they guys drank a couple rounds of the fantastically strong Southern concoction known as the “Hand Grenade.” With the Louisiana’s scorching heat and horrible humidity, I guess it must have seemed like a good idea to cut their hair… OFF. All of it. Andy was quick to whip out a buzzer, right there on stage at Tropical Isle to shave their heads clean.

So, I was sitting at my desk this Tuesday, my first day on the job, probably 5am. Above the hum of a distant Depeche Mode song playing on the overhead speaker, I heard voices, voice that increased in volume with every approaching step. I’d heard these men before, but only on the radio. It was Kevin & Bean and they’d finally returned from their ridiculous road trip.

I looked up to see two bald-headed, cowboy-hat-wearing giants looming above me. It was straight out of a horror movie. I was scared sh*tless. Maria introduced us. I have no idea what I said. All I can recall is their two goofy grins under the brims of a pair of ten gallon hats.

My life would never be the same.
