U2 Annouce Cover Album, Premiere Documentary In Toronto

Bono was comfortably at home in front of the glitz and glamor of the Toronto International Film Festival over the weekend. (Unlike Madonna.) The U2 front man fielded questions from reporters all over globe about …Down, which chronicles the Dublin band’s chaotic times 20 years ago during the recording of the landmark Achtung Baby.
“I found it a little humiliating to realize that we were so inept and these days we’re a better band,” Bono said during a press conference in Toronto. The band notoriously spent countless hours/days/weeks/months in Berlin recording Baby, only to come away with nothing, until the guitar chord progression of “One” was found.
Bono not only held court for the premier of From the Sky Down, which opened the festival, but also announced a surprise for 20th anniversary of Baby.Jack White, Damien Rice and Depeche Mode are among the artists contributing to an Achtung Baby covers album, commissioned by British music magazine Q.
“Jack White does ‘Love Is Blindness,’ Depeche Mode do ‘So Cruel,’ Patti Smith did ‘Until the End of the World,’ Damien Rice does ‘One.’ It just goes on,” Bono told reporters at the press conference. “And it’s strange, because when I hear the album, when U2 do it, all I hear is what’s wrong with it. But when I heard all these artists doing it, I thought, ‘It’s really good.’”
World-famous artist Damien Hirst contributed artwork and a video for “Even Better Than The Real Thing” (seen behind the band in this Glastonbury performance) as well.
Showtime will air From the Sky Down on Oct. 29, and it has already seen some stellar reviews from Toronto. Check out the trailer below:
Any bands/artists you would like to see cover a song of Achtung Baby, or just any U2 song in general?
